Vehicle: 2016 Audi TT 2.0T S line

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2016 Audi TT 2.0T (8S generation) with about 65,000 miles on the odometer. Lately, I've been experiencing some noticeable misfires, especially under acceleration. The car feels a bit rough and hesitant when I try to speed up, and it's not as smooth as it used to be. I've also noticed a slight dip in my fuel economy.

The Check Engine Light came on yesterday, and I scanned it with my OBD-II reader. I got a P0302 code, indicating a misfire on cylinder 2. This makes me think it's either the spark plugs or the ignition coils. I don't think either has been replaced since I bought the car used a couple of years ago.

What's the typical service interval for spark plugs and ignition coils on the 2.0T engine in the TT? Is this a straightforward DIY job, or are there any tricky parts? Should I replace just the faulty coil/plug, or all of them at once?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your diagnosis of spark plugs or ignition coils is very likely correct, especially with a specific misfire code like P0302 on your 2016 Audi TT 2.0T. This is a common maintenance item that can cause the symptoms you're experiencing.

1. Service Interval:

  • Spark Plugs: For the 2.0T engine in your TT, the recommended spark plug replacement interval is typically every 40,000 to 60,000 miles. Given your 65,000 miles, they are definitely due or overdue.
  • Ignition Coils: Ignition coils don't have a fixed replacement interval and are usually replaced as needed. However, it's common practice to replace them all at once if one fails, especially if they are original and have similar mileage, as others may soon follow.

2. DIY Friendliness:

  • Replacing spark plugs and ignition coils on the 2.0T engine is generally considered a straightforward DIY job for someone with basic mechanical skills and tools.
  • Tools Needed: You'll need a spark plug socket (typically 5/8" or 16mm, thin-walled), a torque wrench, a ratchet with extensions, and an ignition coil puller tool (highly recommended to avoid damaging the coils).
  • Procedure: It involves removing the engine cover, disconnecting the electrical connectors from the coils, pulling the coils out, unscrewing the old spark plugs, installing new ones (torqued to spec), reinstalling coils, and reconnecting everything.

3. Replacement Strategy:

  • Spark Plugs: Always replace all four spark plugs at the same time. They wear evenly, and replacing just one won't address the overall performance or efficiency.
  • Ignition Coils: While you have a P0302 for cylinder 2, it's highly recommended to replace all four ignition coils simultaneously, especially if they are original. If one has failed, the others are likely nearing the end of their lifespan. This prevents future misfires from other cylinders shortly after fixing the first one. Use quality OEM or reputable aftermarket coils (e.g., Bosch, NGK, or specific Audi-branded parts).

4. When to See a Shop:

  • If you're uncomfortable with the process, don't have the proper tools (especially the torque wrench and coil puller), or if replacing the plugs and coils doesn't resolve the misfire, then it's time to visit an Audi specialist. They can perform further diagnostics to rule out other potential causes like fuel injectors or compression issues.
