Vehicle: 2018 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro

Hi everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with the MMI system in my 2018 Audi A4 2.0T Quattro. It frequently freezes, becomes unresponsive, or just completely restarts itself while I'm driving. This happens with navigation, radio, and even when just connected to Apple CarPlay.

It's incredibly frustrating, especially when I'm relying on navigation. I've tried doing the soft reset (holding down the volume knob and the two buttons next to it), which sometimes works temporarily, but the problem always comes back. There are no OBD codes related to this, as far as I can tell.

Has anyone else experienced this with their A4 or other Audi models from this generation? Is this a known software bug, or could it be a hardware issue with the MMI control unit? Any tips or TSBs I should be aware of before I take it to the dealership?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Sarah, MMI system glitches, freezing, and unexpected restarts are not uncommon in Audis of your A4's generation, and it can indeed be very frustrating.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Software Glitches: Often, these issues stem from bugs in the MMI's operating software. Updates are frequently released to address these.
    • Corrupted Data: Issues with stored navigation data, phone contacts, or even a problematic media file on a connected device can sometimes cause the system to crash.
    • Hardware Malfunction: Less commonly, but still possible, there could be an issue with the MMI control unit itself, its internal storage, or a related module.
    • Power Fluctuation: Intermittent power supply issues, though rare, can also cause resets.
  2. Troubleshooting Steps You Can Try:

    • Perform a Hard Reset: Beyond the soft reset, try disconnecting the car's battery for 15-30 minutes. This can clear any residual power and force a full system reboot. (Be aware you might need to re-enter radio codes or reset window limits).
    • Check for Updates: Visit your Audi dealer to inquire about any available MMI software updates. This is often the most effective solution for recurring software-related issues. There might be specific Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) related to MMI performance.
    • Isolate the Issue: Try using the MMI without CarPlay/Android Auto, and without any USB devices connected, for a period to see if a specific external input is triggering the problem.
    • Check SD Cards: If you use an SD card for music or navigation, try removing it or using a different one, as a corrupted card can sometimes cause issues.
  3. When to See a Shop: If the problem persists after trying a hard reset and checking for external influences, it's time to visit an authorized Audi service center. They have diagnostic tools that can read specific fault codes within the MMI system (which are separate from standard OBD-II engine codes) and can determine if a software update, module recoding, or hardware replacement is necessary. Be sure to mention all the troubleshooting you've already attempted.
