Vehicle: 2021 Audi A5 Sportback 45 TFSI S line

Hey guys,

I've got a 2021 Audi A5 Sportback, 45 TFSI S line, with about 30,000 miles on it. Lately, I've been hearing an intermittent clunking or knocking noise from the front end, especially when going over small bumps, speed bumps, or uneven pavement at low speeds. It's more noticeable when the weather is colder.

The noise isn't constant, and it seems to come from both sides of the front axle. It doesn't affect steering or braking, but it's definitely there and sounds like something is loose. I've checked for anything obvious like loose wheel nuts, but everything seems tight.

Has anyone with a similar A5 experienced this? What should I be looking for, or is this something I need to take to the dealer immediately? Thanks for the help!

Intermittent clunking or knocking noises from the front suspension, especially over bumps, are common complaints and can stem from various components. In a 2021 Audi A5 with 30,000 miles, it's less likely to be major wear but still warrants investigation.

Common Causes of Front Suspension Noise:

  • Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common source of clunking noises. The ball joints in the end links can wear out, causing play and noise over uneven surfaces.
  • Control Arm Bushings: Worn or deteriorated rubber bushings in the control arms (upper or lower) can cause metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement, leading to clunking.
  • Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top strut mounts or their bearings can wear, causing noise, especially when turning or going over bumps. They can also cause a 'popping' sound.
  • Ball Joints: Worn ball joints in the control arms or steering knuckles can create play and noise.
  • Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a loose brake caliper can mimic suspension noise.

Troubleshooting Steps (Visual Inspection):

  1. Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect the sway bar end links, control arm bushings, and strut mounts for any visible tears, cracks, or excessive play. You may need to lift the car and use a pry bar to check for play in components.
  2. Shake Test: With the front wheels off the ground, try to shake the wheel at 12 and 6 o'clock (for ball joints/wheel bearings) and 3 and 9 o'clock (for tie rods/steering rack) to detect any looseness.
  3. Listen Carefully: Try to pinpoint the exact location of the noise. Sometimes, having a helper bounce the car while you listen can help.

When to See a Shop:

While some checks can be done at home, diagnosing suspension noises accurately often requires specialized tools and expertise. It's recommended to take your A5 to an Audi dealership or an experienced independent mechanic. They can:

  • Perform a professional suspension inspection, often with the vehicle on a lift, to identify worn components.
  • Check for any technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to suspension noises for your specific model year.
  • Diagnose specific part failures (e.g., worn sway bar end links, control arm bushings, strut mounts) and provide an accurate repair estimate. Addressing suspension issues promptly is important for ride comfort and vehicle safety.
