Vehicle: 2018 Audi A5 Sportback Premium Plus

Hey everyone,

I'm having a persistent issue with my 2018 Audi A5 Sportback, 2.0T Premium Plus. The MMI screen frequently freezes, especially when using Apple CarPlay. It'll just lock up for 30-60 seconds, then sometimes restart itself, or I have to manually reboot it by holding down the volume knob.

When it freezes, CarPlay usually disconnects, and then it's a struggle to get it to reconnect. Sometimes it works fine for a few days, then the problem resurfaces. It's really frustrating when I'm trying to use navigation or make a call.

Has anyone else experienced this with their A5? Is there a software update I'm missing or a known fix for this? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

MMI system issues, especially freezing and CarPlay disconnections, are not uncommon in Audi vehicles from this era. Several factors can contribute to these problems.

Common Causes:

  • Software Glitches: Outdated or corrupted MMI software is a primary culprit. Updates often address bugs and improve stability.
  • Hardware Malfunction: Less commonly, a failing MMI control unit or a loose connection can cause intermittent issues.
  • Phone/Cable Issues: Sometimes, the problem can be with your iPhone's software, the USB cable, or even the CarPlay app itself.
  • Module Interference: Other connected modules (e.g., Bluetooth, navigation) can sometimes interfere with MMI's performance.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform an MMI Reset: Hold down the volume knob, the radio button, and the top right button above the volume knob simultaneously for about 10 seconds until the screen goes black and restarts. This is a soft reset and can resolve minor glitches.
  2. Check for MMI Software Updates: Visit your Audi dealership. They can check if there are any pending software updates for your specific MMI version. This is often the most effective solution.
  3. Test Different USB Cables/Phones: Try a brand new, high-quality MFi-certified USB cable. Also, test with a different iPhone if possible to rule out phone-specific issues.
  4. Clear Phone Cache/Update iOS: Ensure your iPhone's iOS is up to date and try clearing the cache for apps you frequently use with CarPlay.

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after performing the above steps, especially if the MMI system freezes even when CarPlay is not active, it's time to visit an authorized Audi service center. They have diagnostic tools (like ODIS) that can:

  • Read specific fault codes from the MMI control unit (e.g., U014600 - Lost Communication with Gateway 'A', B200000 - Control Module Fault).
  • Perform advanced software diagnostics and updates.
  • Test the MMI control unit and associated wiring for hardware failures. They can also check for any technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to your specific MMI system.
