Vehicle: 2017 Audi A6 3.0T Quattro

Hello Audi community,

I'm experiencing some concerning transmission behavior in my 2017 Audi A6 3.0T Quattro. When driving at low speeds, especially in stop-and-go traffic or when downshifting, the transmission feels like it's hesitating or jerking. It's not a smooth transition, and sometimes there's a noticeable thump.

This happens most often when coming to a stop and then accelerating again, or when the car is shifting between 1st and 2nd gear. It's got about 70,000 miles on it. I've heard about some Audi transmissions having issues, but I'm hoping it's not something major.

Has anyone else with a C7 A6 experienced this? What was the fix? Could it be a software issue or something mechanical?

Transmission hesitation and jerking, particularly at low speeds or during specific gear changes, in your 2017 Audi A6 3.0T Quattro, points towards issues within the automatic transmission (likely the 8-speed Tiptronic or S-Tronic, depending on your specific configuration). These symptoms can be caused by a range of factors, from minor software glitches to more significant mechanical wear.

Possible Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. Low or Contaminated Transmission Fluid: While Audi often states 'lifetime' fluid, fluid degradation or low levels can cause shifting issues. The fluid can lose its lubricating properties over time, especially under heavy use.
  2. Mechatronic Unit Issues: The Mechatronic unit is the control center of the S-Tronic (DSG) transmission, combining the TCU (Transmission Control Unit) and hydraulic valve body. Faults here are a common cause of erratic shifting, hesitation, and jerking.
  3. Clutch Pack Wear (S-Tronic): If your A6 has the S-Tronic dual-clutch transmission, worn clutch packs can lead to harsh engagements and hesitation, particularly during low-speed maneuvers.
  4. Software Glitch/Adaptation: Sometimes, the transmission's control unit might require a software update or a re-adaptation of its shifting parameters. This can often resolve minor shifting anomalies.
  5. Torque Converter (Tiptronic): If you have the traditional Tiptronic automatic, a failing torque converter can cause shuddering or harsh engagement, especially at low speeds.

When to See a Shop:

  • Promptly: Transmission issues can worsen quickly and lead to very expensive repairs if not addressed. Continuing to drive with noticeable jerking can accelerate wear on other components.
  • Specialized Scan: A standard OBD-II scanner might not pick up specific transmission fault codes. You'll need an Audi-specific diagnostic tool (like VCDS or ODIS) to read codes from the Transmission Control Module (TCM). Look for codes related to:
    • P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction)
    • Specific Audi fault codes related to gear monitoring, clutch pressure, or Mechatronic unit errors.
  • Transmission Specialist: It is highly recommended to take your A6 to an Audi dealership or a reputable independent transmission specialist. They can perform a thorough diagnosis, check fluid levels and condition, and determine if a software update, Mechatronic repair, or more extensive transmission work is required. Do not ignore these symptoms.
