ABS and ESC Lights On - 2021 Audi A6 3.0T

Vehicle: 2021 Audi A6 3.0T

My 2021 Audi A6 3.0T just threw up the ABS and ESC warning lights on the dashboard. They came on simultaneously while I was driving on the highway. I haven't noticed any immediate changes in braking performance, but it's definitely concerning.

I tried restarting the car a couple of times, but the lights are still there. There are no other warning messages, just these two. The car has about 45,000 miles on it.

Has anyone experienced this with a newer Audi? What could be causing this, and is it safe to drive? I'm hoping it's not an expensive module issue.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2021 Audi A6, it indicates a fault within the vehicle's braking and stability control systems. While you haven't noticed immediate braking changes, these systems are crucial for safety, and driving with them compromised is not advisable.

Here are the most common causes for these warning lights:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one fails or becomes dirty/damaged, the ABS/ESC module loses critical data, triggering the lights. Common OBD-II codes associated with this include P0500 (Vehicle Speed Sensor Malfunction) or specific C-codes like C0031-C0034 (for individual wheel speed sensor circuits).
  2. ABS Module Malfunction: The ABS control module itself can fail. This is less common on newer vehicles but can happen. A faulty module might not be able to process sensor data correctly or control the ABS/ESC functions.
  3. Wiring Issues: Damaged or corroded wiring to the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can interrupt signals, leading to fault lights.
  4. Brake Fluid Level: While less common to trigger both, extremely low brake fluid can sometimes cause issues with braking systems.
  5. Steering Angle Sensor: The ESC system relies on the steering angle sensor to know the steering wheel's position. A fault here can also trigger the ESC light, and sometimes the ABS light as well.

When to See a Shop: It is not safe to drive for an extended period with these lights on. Your ABS and ESC systems are likely disabled, meaning you won't have anti-lock braking in an emergency stop, and the car won't automatically correct for skids. This significantly increases the risk of losing control.

  • Immediate Action: Get your car to a qualified Audi specialist or a reputable shop as soon as possible. They will need to connect a diagnostic scanner (preferably one that can read Audi-specific codes, like VCDS or ODIS) to retrieve the exact fault codes. These codes will pinpoint the specific sensor or module that has failed, allowing for an accurate diagnosis and repair.
