Vehicle: 2020 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige

Hello A6 owners,

I'm experiencing an issue with the adaptive air suspension on my 2020 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige. Recently, I've noticed the car feels a bit lower than usual, especially on one side, and now I'm getting an 'Air Suspension Malfunction' warning light on the dashboard.

The ride quality has also deteriorated; it feels much harsher over bumps. Sometimes, when I start the car, it takes a while to raise to the correct height, and I can hear the compressor working harder than usual. The car has around 45,000 miles.

Has anyone encountered this with their C8 A6? What could be the potential causes, and is this something that needs immediate attention?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

An 'Air Suspension Malfunction' warning on your 2020 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige, especially with symptoms like sagging, harsh ride, and an overworked compressor, indicates a problem within the adaptive air suspension system. These systems are complex and rely on multiple components working in harmony.

Common Causes:

  • Air Spring Leak: This is one of the most common failures. The rubber air bladder (air spring/air bag) can develop leaks over time, causing one or more corners of the car to sag.
  • Air Compressor Failure: The compressor is responsible for pumping air into the system. If it's failing, it might run constantly, make excessive noise, or fail to pressurize the system adequately.
  • Valve Block Malfunction: The valve block directs air to individual air springs. A faulty valve block can cause uneven ride height or prevent the system from holding pressure.
  • Level Sensor Issues: Height sensors at each wheel tell the control module the car's current height. A faulty sensor can give incorrect readings, leading to improper leveling.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics:

  1. Check for DTCs: A specialized Audi diagnostic tool will provide specific fault codes from the level control system module (Address 34 - Level Control). Common codes include:
    • C103100: Level control system fault
    • C103200: Compressor fault
    • C103400: Pressure sensor fault
    • C103500: Air spring leak (often accompanied by a specific corner indication)
  2. Visual Inspection: Look for obvious damage or cracks on the air springs, especially at the bellows.
  3. Listen for Leaks: With the car running, listen closely around each wheel well for hissing sounds, which could indicate an air leak.

When to See a Shop: It is highly recommended to have your Audi A6 inspected by an Audi dealership or an independent specialist immediately. Driving with a compromised air suspension can lead to further damage to the compressor (if it's constantly running to compensate for a leak) and significantly impact vehicle handling and safety. Diagnosis requires specialized equipment to read fault codes, perform system tests, and pinpoint the exact failing component, which often requires replacement.
