Vehicle: 2022 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige

Hi everyone, I'm a bit stumped with a noise coming from the front end of my 2022 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige. It's developed a noticeable creaking or groaning sound, especially prominent when going over speed bumps, uneven pavement, or sometimes when turning at low speeds. It sounds like it's coming from the front passenger side, but it's hard to pinpoint exactly.

The car only has about 25,000 miles on it, so I wouldn't expect suspension components to be failing already. Has anyone else with a newer A6 experienced this? What should I be looking for, or is this something that needs immediate dealer attention?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Suspension noises, especially creaks and groans, can be annoying and sometimes indicative of a developing issue. While 25,000 miles is relatively low for major component failure, certain parts can wear prematurely or simply need lubrication. The A6's multi-link suspension system has several points where noise can originate.

Common Causes for Creaking/Groaning Suspension Noise:

  1. Control Arm Bushings: Worn or dry rubber bushings in the control arms (upper or lower) are a very common source of creaking noises. As rubber ages or dries out, it loses its ability to flex silently.
  2. Sway Bar Bushings/End Links: The bushings that hold the sway bar to the chassis, or the end links connecting the sway bar to the control arms, can dry out or wear, causing creaks, especially over bumps or when turning.
  3. Ball Joints: Worn ball joints in the control arms can also produce creaking or popping sounds as they articulate.
  4. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top strut mounts or the strut bearings can wear out, leading to noise, particularly when turning the steering wheel.
  5. Loose Fasteners: Less common, but sometimes a suspension component fastener can loosen slightly, allowing for minor movement and noise.

What to Do:

  • Visual Inspection: Carefully inspect the control arm bushings, sway bar bushings, and end links for any visible cracks, tears, or excessive play. Have someone bounce the car or turn the wheel while you listen closely.
  • Lubrication (Temporary Fix): A temporary fix for dry bushings can sometimes be a silicone-based lubricant spray (avoid petroleum-based on rubber). This can help confirm if the bushings are the source of the noise.
  • Check Tire Pressure: While unlikely to cause creaking, incorrect tire pressure can affect how the suspension reacts to road imperfections.

When to See a Shop:

Given your 2022 A6 is relatively new, it's highly likely still under warranty. You should take it to an authorized Audi dealership as soon as possible. They have the specialized tools and knowledge to:

  1. Diagnose Accurately: Pinpoint the exact source of the noise, whether it's a specific control arm, sway bar link, or other component.
  2. Warranty Repair: If a component is found to be faulty due to manufacturing defect or premature wear, it will likely be covered under your factory warranty.

Ignoring suspension noises can sometimes lead to accelerated wear on other components or, in rare cases, compromise handling and safety. It's best to have it professionally inspected.
