Vehicle: 2021 Audi A6 45 TFSI Premium

Hi everyone,

I've run into an issue with the LED headlights on my 2021 Audi A6 45 TFSI Premium. Over the past few weeks, the driver's side headlight has started flickering intermittently, almost like a strobe light, especially when I first turn them on. Sometimes, a 'Headlight Malfunction' warning pops up on the MMI screen.

The flickering usually stops after a few minutes, but it's concerning, and I'm worried it might eventually fail completely. The car only has about 25,000 miles on it, and I wouldn't expect this kind of problem on a relatively new vehicle.

Has anyone experienced similar issues with the LED lighting system on their C8 A6? What could be causing this, and is it a warranty item?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Flickering LED headlights and a 'Headlight Malfunction' warning on a newer 2021 Audi A6 45 TFSI are certainly concerning and point to a fault within the sophisticated LED lighting system. Given the vehicle's age and mileage, this is highly likely to be a warranty-covered issue.

Common Causes:

  • LED Control Module (Ballast) Failure: Each LED headlight assembly has a control module (often referred to as a ballast) that regulates power to the LED elements. A failing module can cause flickering, dimming, or complete failure.
  • Loose Electrical Connection: While less common on a newer car, a loose or corroded connection to the headlight assembly or its control module can cause intermittent power delivery.
  • Internal LED Element Failure: Though rare, individual LED elements within the headlight housing can fail or become unstable.
  • Software Glitch: The vehicle's central electronics control module (J519) manages lighting. A software anomaly could theoretically cause erratic behavior.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics:

  1. Check for DTCs: An Audi-specific diagnostic scan will be crucial. Fault codes related to the headlight module (e.g., Address 09 - Central Electrics, or Address 29/39 - Left/Right Light Control) will pinpoint the exact issue. Look for codes like:
    • B100B01: Left headlight module fault
    • B100C01: Right headlight module fault
    • B100D01: Headlight power output stage fault
  2. Visual Inspection: While difficult for an owner, a technician will check physical connections and for any signs of water ingress into the headlight housing.

When to See a Shop: Given your 2021 A6 is still relatively new, it's highly recommended to take it to an authorized Audi dealership immediately. This issue should be covered under your factory warranty. Do not attempt to diagnose or repair complex LED headlight systems yourself, as they involve high voltage and intricate electronics. The dealership has the specialized diagnostic tools and expertise to identify the failing component (most likely the LED control module) and replace it under warranty. Ignoring the issue could lead to complete headlight failure, compromising safety.
