Vehicle: 2020 Audi A6 3.0T Premium Plus

Hi everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2020 Audi A6 3.0T (C8 generation) that just hit 45,000 miles. Over the past week, I've received a 'Low Coolant' warning on my MMI display a couple of times. I've topped it off, but it seems to be slowly dropping again. I also occasionally catch a faint sweet smell of coolant, especially after driving, but I can't see any obvious puddles under the car.

I've checked the expansion tank, and there are no visible cracks. I'm worried it might be the water pump, as I've heard they can be problematic on some Audi models. Is this a common issue for the 3.0T in the C8 A6?

What are the typical signs of a failing water pump on these cars, and are there any specific areas I should check for leaks? If it is the water pump, is it a major repair?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Your symptoms of a recurring low coolant warning and the smell of coolant are strong indicators of a leak in your 2020 Audi A6 3.0T. While there are many potential leak points, the water pump and its associated thermostat housing are indeed common culprits on these engines.

1. Common Signs of a Failing Water Pump/Coolant Leak:

  • Low Coolant Warning: The most direct sign, as you've experienced.
  • Sweet Coolant Smell: Often noticeable after the engine has warmed up and shut off, even without visible puddles. This indicates evaporation of small leaks.
  • Visible Coolant Leaks: Check around the front of the engine, specifically below the water pump housing (often plastic on these models) and the thermostat housing. Leaks can be subtle and only appear when the system is pressurized.
  • Overheating: If the leak becomes severe, the engine can overheat. This might trigger OBD-II codes like P2181 (Cooling System Performance) or P0117 (Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor 1 Circuit Low) if the sensor detects an issue.
  • Pink/White Residue: Dried coolant often leaves a distinct pink or white crusty residue around the leak point.

2. Common Leak Points to Check:

  • Water Pump Housing: The plastic housing can crack or seals can fail.
  • Thermostat Housing: Often integrated with the water pump or nearby, these plastic components are prone to cracking or seal failure.
  • Coolant Hoses: Check all hoses for cracks, bulges, or loose clamps.
  • Radiator: Inspect for damage or leaks.

3. Repair Complexity:

  • Replacing the water pump and/or thermostat on the 3.0T engine is a significant repair. It's not a simple bolt-on job. It often requires removing the supercharger (if applicable to your specific 3.0T variant, though C8 3.0T is turbo), draining the cooling system, and dealing with multiple hoses and sensors. It's a time-consuming and labor-intensive process.

4. When to See a Shop:

  • Given the complexity and the critical nature of the cooling system, it's highly recommended to have your A6 inspected by an authorized Audi dealership or a specialized independent Audi repair shop. They have the diagnostic tools (like pressure testers to pinpoint leaks), specialized knowledge, and experience to perform this repair correctly. Driving with a persistent coolant leak can lead to severe engine damage from overheating.
