Vehicle: 2020 Audi A6 3.0T Premium Plus

Hey guys,

I'm having an issue with the parking sensors on my 2020 Audi A6 3.0T Premium Plus. For the past few weeks, they've been acting up. Sometimes they work fine, but often when I put the car in reverse or get close to an object, I get a 'Parking System Malfunction' warning on the MMI screen.

It's really inconsistent. Sometimes one or two sensors will show red on the display even when there's nothing there, and other times the whole system just shuts down. I've tried cleaning the sensors on the bumper, thinking maybe dirt was the issue, but it hasn't helped. It's making parking a real pain, especially in tight spots.

Has anyone else experienced this with their A6 or other Audi models? What could be causing this intermittent malfunction? Any advice would be appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Parking system malfunctions are common and can be caused by several factors, ranging from simple obstructions to more complex electrical issues. Here's a guide to understanding and addressing the problem in your 2020 Audi A6:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Thorough Sensor Cleaning: While you've cleaned them, ensure there's absolutely no residue, ice, or dirt, and check for any physical damage like cracks or dents on the sensors themselves.
  2. Check for Obstructions: Ensure no license plate frames, tow hitches, or aftermarket accessories are blocking the sensor's line of sight.
  3. MMI Reset: Perform a soft MMI reset (usually holding the volume knob and two function buttons) to see if it clears a temporary software glitch.

Common Causes:

  • Dirty/Damaged Sensors: Even minor dirt or a small crack can interfere with the ultrasonic waves. Physical impact can damage internal components.
  • Loose Wiring/Connections: The wiring harness to individual sensors can become loose or corroded, especially if exposed to road salt or moisture. This often leads to intermittent issues.
  • Faulty Sensor: One or more individual parking sensors could be failing. When one sensor malfunctions, it often disables the entire system or causes incorrect readings.
  • Parking Aid Control Module (J446) Issues: Less common, but the central control module for the parking aid system could be faulty or have a software issue. This would typically trigger specific diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
  • Electromagnetic Interference: Rarely, strong external electromagnetic fields can temporarily interfere with sensor operation.

When to See a Shop:

If cleaning and an MMI reset don't resolve the issue, it's time to visit an Audi service center. They can connect to the vehicle's diagnostic system and pull specific fault codes related to the parking aid system. Common codes might include: B10F604 - Front Left Parking Aid Sensor - Internal Fault, B10F704 - Front Right Parking Aid Sensor - Internal Fault, or U012100 - Lost Communication with Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) Control Module (if related systems are affected). These codes will pinpoint the exact sensor or module that requires attention, allowing for precise replacement or repair of wiring, sensors, or the control module.
