Vehicle: 2017 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige

Hey everyone, I've been experiencing some really strange transmission behavior in my 2017 Audi A6 3.0T Prestige lately. When accelerating from a stop, especially in traffic, there's a noticeable hesitation before the car lurches forward. It feels like the transmission is struggling to engage the right gear.

I've also noticed some rough shifts, particularly between 1st and 2nd, and sometimes 2nd and 3rd. It's not constant, but it's becoming more frequent and quite concerning. The car has about 70,000 miles on it, and I've kept up with all the scheduled maintenance.

Has anyone else with a C7.5 A6 experienced similar issues with their S-tronic transmission? I'm worried it might be something serious and want to get some opinions before heading to the dealer.

This sounds like a common issue with the DL501 S-tronic (7-speed dual-clutch) transmission found in many Audi models, including your 2017 A6 3.0T. The symptoms you describe – hesitation, lurching, and rough shifts – often point to problems with the mechatronic unit or clutch packs.

Common Causes:

  • Mechatronic Unit Failure: This is a complex electro-hydraulic control unit that manages gear selection and clutch engagement. Internal solenoid failures or circuit board issues can lead to erratic shifting.
  • Clutch Pack Wear: While less common at 70,000 miles if not abused, worn clutch packs can cause slipping and harsh engagement.
  • Transmission Fluid Issues: Contaminated or low transmission fluid can also contribute to poor shifting, though regular maintenance should mitigate this.

Troubleshooting & Diagnostics:

  1. Check for DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes): A professional scan tool (like VCDS or ODIS) will often reveal specific codes related to the mechatronic unit. Common codes include:
    • P17E0: Gear selector 2 mechanical malfunction
    • P17D8: Clutch temperature monitoring
    • P17BF: Hydraulic pump play protection
  2. Software Update: Sometimes, a simple software update for the transmission control module (TCM) can resolve minor shifting anomalies.
  3. Fluid Level and Condition: Ensure the transmission fluid (ATF and gear oil) levels are correct and the fluid is not burnt or contaminated.

When to See a Shop: It's highly recommended to have your Audi A6 inspected by an Audi specialist or a reputable independent shop familiar with S-tronic transmissions as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with these symptoms can potentially lead to more severe and costly damage. They will be able to perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan, check fluid levels, and determine if a mechatronic unit replacement or repair is necessary. This is not a DIY job for most owners due to the specialized tools and programming required.
