2020 Audi A7 Hesitation and Rough Shifts at Low Speeds

Vehicle: 2020 Audi A7 Prestige

My 2020 Audi A7 Prestige, with about 45,000 miles, has started acting strange with its transmission. Specifically, at lower speeds, like in stop-and-go traffic or when accelerating from a near stop, it hesitates quite a bit before engaging, and sometimes the shifts feel really rough, almost like a jolt.

It's most noticeable between 1st and 2nd gear, and sometimes 2nd to 3rd. Once I'm up to speed, it seems to be fine, but the low-speed behavior is concerning. There's no check engine light on, but I'm worried this could be a sign of a bigger problem with the S-tronic transmission.

Has anyone with an A7 or a similar Audi model experienced this? What was the fix? Should I be worried about needing a new transmission already?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission hesitation and rough shifts at low speeds, particularly with Audi's S-tronic (dual-clutch) transmissions, can be a cause for concern but aren't always indicative of catastrophic failure. Several factors could be at play.

  1. Transmission Software Adaptation: The S-tronic transmission is adaptive. Over time, driving styles and conditions can cause the transmission's learned shift points to become less optimal. A dealership can perform a transmission adaptation reset, which clears the learned values and allows the transmission to re-learn optimal shifting.
  2. Low Transmission Fluid: While sealed transmissions are common, fluid levels can still be a factor. Low or degraded transmission fluid (ATF) can cause shifting issues. Audi recommends specific service intervals for transmission fluid and filter changes, which your 2020 A7 might be approaching or due for, especially if it's experiencing hard use.
  3. Mechatronic Unit Issues: The mechatronic unit is the brain of the S-tronic transmission, controlling the clutches and gear changes. Faults within this unit, such as solenoid failures or pressure issues, are a known cause of rough shifting and hesitation. This often requires specialized diagnostics and repair.
  4. Clutch Pack Wear: Although less common at 45,000 miles, excessive wear on the clutch packs within the dual-clutch transmission can lead to slipping and harsh engagement. This is usually accompanied by a burning smell or more consistent poor performance.

When to See a Shop: Since there's no check engine light, a generic OBD-II scanner might not show anything. However, an Audi-specific diagnostic tool (VCDS or ODIS) can access transmission control module (TCM) fault codes (e.g., P17D8 - Torque limitation due to clutch temperature, P0726 - Engine Speed Input Circuit Range/Performance) and monitor live data for clutch pressures and solenoid operation. It's highly recommended to take your A7 to an authorized Audi service center or a reputable independent Audi specialist. They can accurately diagnose the issue, check for technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to your specific transmission, and recommend the appropriate repair, which could range from a simple software update to a mechatronic unit replacement.
