Vehicle: 2022 Audi A5 Sportback 45 TFSI

Hey guys, I'm having trouble with my 2022 Audi A5 Sportback 45 TFSI. The adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane assist systems have been acting up. Sometimes when I try to activate ACC, I get a 'Adaptive Cruise Control Malfunction' message on the virtual cockpit, and the system won't engage.

Other times, it works for a bit, then suddenly disengages with the same error message. The lane assist also seems less reliable, occasionally failing to detect lane lines or giving false warnings. It's really frustrating because these are features I rely on for highway driving.

I've checked the sensors in the front grille and windshield for obstructions, and they seem clear. Is this a common electronic glitch for newer Audis, or could it be a sensor problem? What should I tell the service department?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Assist malfunctions on a 2022 Audi A5 Sportback can be concerning, as these systems rely on complex sensors and software. While you've checked for physical obstructions, the issue often lies deeper.

Potential Causes:

  1. Sensor Calibration: The radar sensor (front grille) for ACC and the camera (windshield) for lane assist require precise calibration. Even a minor bump or misalignment can throw them off, leading to malfunctions. This is a common cause, especially after a minor impact or windshield replacement.
  2. Software Glitch: As with many advanced electronic systems, a software bug or corrupted module can cause intermittent failures. A software update for the driver assistance control unit (J428 for ACC, J852 for Lane Assist camera) might be necessary.
  3. Wiring/Connector Issues: Damaged wiring or loose connections to the radar sensor, camera, or associated control modules can cause intermittent communication errors.
  4. Control Module Failure: Less common in newer vehicles, but a fault within the ACC radar sensor module or the front camera control module itself could be the culprit.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Service: Given that these are safety-critical driver assistance systems, it's important to have them checked by an Audi dealer promptly.
  • Diagnostic Scan: A professional diagnostic scan using ODIS (Audi's diagnostic software) will be essential. The system will likely have stored fault codes even if no warning light is constantly on. Look for codes related to:
    • ACC Radar Sensor (Module 13): Such as C1101 (Radar Sensor Malfunction), U0401 (Invalid Data Received from ECM/PCM), or C1001 (Control Module Fault).
    • Front Camera/Lane Assist (Module A5): Such as C1001 (Control Module Fault), B2000 (Control Module Internal Electronic Fault), or U0420 (Invalid Data Received from Steering Angle Sensor Module).
  • Calibration Check: The technician will likely check the calibration status of the radar sensor and front camera. If out of spec, a recalibration procedure will be performed.
  • Warranty: Your 2022 A5 should be well within its factory warranty period, so this repair should be covered.
