Vehicle: 2018 Audi Q3 Premium

Hey everyone,

I've been experiencing some really frustrating issues with my 2018 Audi Q3 Premium. Lately, the transmission feels like it's hesitating quite a bit, especially when I accelerate from a stop or at lower speeds. It's almost like there's a delay before it engages, and then it sometimes jerks quite noticeably.

It's not constant, but it's happening more frequently, and I'm worried it could be a sign of a bigger problem. I haven't seen any warning lights on the dash yet, but the driving experience is definitely degraded.

Has anyone else with a 2016-2026 Q3 experienced similar transmission behavior? What was the cause, and how was it resolved? Any advice would be greatly appreciated before I take it to the dealer.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Transmission hesitation and jerking in your 2018 Audi Q3 can be caused by several factors, especially with the dual-clutch transmission (DSG) common in these models. Here's what to consider:

  1. Check for Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): Even without a check engine light, a professional scan tool can often reveal pending or historic codes. Look for codes like P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction), P0730 (Incorrect Gear Ratio), or P17XX series codes which are specific to Audi's transmission control unit (TCU).
  2. DSG Mechatronics Unit Issue: The mechatronics unit is the brain of the DSG, controlling clutch engagement and gear selection. Failure or degradation of this unit is a known issue in some DSG transmissions and can cause erratic shifting, hesitation, and jerking. Symptoms often worsen with temperature.
  3. Clutch Pack Wear: While less common at this mileage unless driven hard, worn clutch packs can lead to slipping and harsh engagement. This would typically be accompanied by higher RPMs without corresponding acceleration.
  4. Transmission Fluid Level and Quality: Although DSGs are sealed units, low or degraded transmission fluid (DSG oil) can impact performance. A fluid and filter change might be recommended if it hasn't been done according to Audi's maintenance schedule.
  5. Software Updates: Sometimes, the TCU simply needs a software update to refine shifting logic and address known glitches.

When to See a Shop:

It's highly recommended to have your Audi Q3 inspected by an Audi-certified mechanic or a specialist shop familiar with DSG transmissions as soon as possible. Ignoring these symptoms can lead to more severe and costly damage. They can perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan, check the mechatronics unit, inspect clutch wear, and recommend the appropriate repair, which could range from a software update to a mechatronics unit replacement.
