Vehicle: 2018 Audi Q5 Premium Plus

Hey everyone, I'm having some frustrating issues with the MMI system in my 2018 Audi Q5 Premium Plus. Lately, the screen has been freezing up completely, sometimes going totally black for a few minutes before restarting itself. It's really annoying, especially when I'm relying on navigation or trying to change radio stations.

I've tried restarting the car, but the problem seems to be intermittent. It happens whether I'm using Apple CarPlay or just the native Audi interface. Has anyone else experienced this with their Q5, or other Audi models from this generation?

Is this a known software glitch, or could it be a hardware problem? I'm wondering if there's a simple reset procedure I can do, or if I'm looking at a costly repair. Any advice on troubleshooting or what to expect if I take it to the dealer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

MMI system issues like freezing or black screens are not uncommon in Audi vehicles, especially in the 2016-2020 model years, and can stem from several sources.

  1. Software Glitch/Update Needed: Often, these problems are resolved with a software update. Audi frequently releases updates to improve MMI stability and functionality.

    • Action: Try performing a 'hard reset' of the MMI system first. This usually involves holding down a combination of buttons (often the MMI control knob, the top right function button, and the top left function button simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds). If this doesn't work, check if your dealer has any pending software updates for your specific MMI version.
  2. Module Malfunction: Less commonly, a specific MMI control module (e.g., the main unit, display unit, or a related component) might be failing. This can lead to intermittent issues that worsen over time.

    • Action: If a software update doesn't resolve the issue, a diagnostic scan at an Audi-specialized shop is recommended. They can check for specific fault codes related to the MMI system. While there aren't typical OBD-II codes for MMI issues, Audi's proprietary diagnostic tools can pinpoint module failures.
  3. Power Supply/Wiring: Intermittent power supply or loose wiring to the MMI unit can also cause these symptoms.

    • Action: This is harder to diagnose without specialized tools. A technician would need to check power and ground connections to the MMI unit.

When to See a Shop: If a hard reset and checking for software updates don't fix the problem, or if the issue becomes more frequent and severe, it's time to visit an authorized Audi service center or a reputable independent Audi specialist. They have the necessary diagnostic equipment (like ODIS) to accurately identify the root cause and perform any required module replacements or advanced software flashing.
