Hey everyone, I'm having some really frustrating issues with the MMI system in my 2018 Audi Q5 Premium Plus. Lately, it's been freezing up completely, sometimes for a few seconds, other times it just goes to a black screen and reboots itself. It's totally random and makes using navigation or even just changing the radio station a pain.

I've tried doing the soft reset (holding down the volume knob and two other buttons), and that sometimes helps for a bit, but the problem always comes back. It's not just when I'm using Apple CarPlay; it happens with the native system too.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Q5 or other Audi models from around this year? Is this a known software glitch or could it be something more serious with the MMI module itself? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Summary: For 2018 Q5 MMI Freezing and Black Screen Issues, work through these steps on your 2016+ vehicle:

  1. Confirm the symptom — note when it happens (cold start, highway, after fuel fill, etc.).
  2. Scan codes — save all pending/stored DTCs; don't clear until you've recorded them.
  3. Check TSBs & recalls — look up your VIN for open campaigns and known fixes.
  4. Inspect the obvious — related fuses, connectors, fluid level, and recent repairs.
  5. Test the common fix — follow model-specific service procedures; one change at a time.
  6. Escalate if needed — burning smell, no brakes, overheating, or stalling in traffic → shop visit.
