Vehicle: 2020 Audi Q5 Premium Plus

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really frustrating issue with my 2020 Audi Q5 Premium Plus. The MMI infotainment system has started freezing up randomly, usually for a few seconds, and then it completely reboots itself. This can happen multiple times during a single drive, making navigation and music impossible to use reliably.

It seems to be completely random – sometimes it happens right after starting the car, other times it's an hour into a trip. There's no specific action I take that triggers it. I've tried doing the soft reset (holding the volume knob down) a few times, and it temporarily fixes it, but the problem always comes back within a day or two.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Q5 or similar Audi models from this generation? I'm worried it might be a deeper electrical issue rather than just a software glitch. Any advice on what I should check before taking it to the dealership?

Intermittent MMI freezing and rebooting in your 2020 Audi Q5 can be a common, yet frustrating, electrical issue. It often points to a problem within the infotainment system's hardware, software, or its power supply.

Common Causes:

  1. Software Glitch: Corrupted software or a bug in the MMI's operating system can cause instability.
  2. Faulty MMI Control Unit (J794): The main MMI control module itself can fail, leading to erratic behavior.
  3. Power Supply Issues: Fluctuations in voltage, a loose connection, or a failing fuse supplying power to the MMI unit can cause reboots.
  4. Wiring Harness Damage: Less common, but damaged or corroded wiring to the MMI unit can disrupt communication and power.
  5. Component Communication Errors: Other modules on the vehicle's CAN bus network might be interfering or experiencing issues, leading to MMI instability.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: While you've done a soft reset, try disconnecting the vehicle's main battery for 15-20 minutes. This can sometimes clear persistent electrical gremlins. Ensure you know your radio code if applicable, though modern Audis usually don't require it after battery disconnect.
  2. Check MMI Fuses: Locate the fuse box diagram (usually in your owner's manual or on a panel cover) and identify the fuses related to the MMI or infotainment system. Inspect them for any signs of being blown or loose.
  3. Monitor Battery Voltage: A weak or failing 12V battery can cause various electrical issues. If your battery is old or you notice other electrical quirks, have its health tested.

When to See a Shop: If the problem persists after these steps, or if you notice other electrical components acting strangely, it's time to visit an authorized Audi service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools (like ODIS or VCDS) that can:

  • Scan for Fault Codes: They can access specific control modules (like address 5F for Information Electr. and address 19 for Gateway) to look for codes such as B100000 (Control Module Faulty), U014600 (Lost Communication With Gateway Module A), or other communication and internal fault codes related to the MMI unit.
  • Perform Software Updates: There might be a newer software version for your MMI that resolves known bugs.
  • Diagnose Hardware Failure: They can test the MMI control unit and associated wiring to pinpoint a hardware fault.
