Vehicle: 2021 Audi Q5 45 TFSI S-Line

My 2021 Audi Q5 45 TFSI with the S-Tronic transmission has been acting up lately. It started with occasional harsh shifts, especially from 2nd to 3rd gear, and now it's gotten worse. Sometimes, the car will suddenly jerk violently and then go into limp mode, displaying a transmission malfunction warning on the MMI.

I pulled the codes, and I'm getting a P073A, which points to an 'Incorrect Gear Ratio' or 'Shift Actuator Malfunction'. It usually happens when I'm accelerating moderately. Restarting the car sometimes clears the limp mode temporarily, but the issue keeps coming back.

Is this a common problem with the S-Tronic? What should I be looking at? I'm worried it's a mechatronics unit issue.

Experiencing harsh shifts, jerking, and limp mode with an S-Tronic (DSG) transmission, especially with a P073A code, is indeed a serious concern and points towards internal transmission issues. The P073A code specifically relates to a problem with gear ratio or a shift actuator, often indicating a fault within the mechatronics unit or potentially mechanical wear within the gearbox itself.

Here's a breakdown of potential causes and what to do:

  1. Mechatronics Unit Failure: This is a common point of failure in S-Tronic transmissions. The mechatronics unit is the control center of the transmission, housing the TCU (Transmission Control Unit), solenoids, and hydraulic valves. Malfunctions here can lead to incorrect gear selection, harsh shifts, and limp mode.
  2. Clutch Pack Wear: While less likely on a 2021 model unless it has very high mileage or has been driven hard, worn clutch packs can also contribute to incorrect gear ratios and slippage, leading to similar symptoms.
  3. Transmission Fluid Issues: Low or contaminated transmission fluid can severely impact the operation of the S-Tronic. Ensure the fluid level is correct and that it's been serviced according to Audi's schedule. However, a P073A typically suggests a component failure rather than just fluid degradation.
  4. Wiring/Sensor Issues: Less common, but faulty speed sensors within the transmission or damaged wiring to the mechatronics unit could also cause incorrect readings and trigger the code.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. Transmission issues, especially those causing limp mode and specific gear ratio codes, require immediate professional attention. Continuing to drive the vehicle can cause further, more severe, and more costly damage to the transmission.
  • An Audi dealership or a specialized independent Audi/VW transmission shop will have the necessary diagnostic tools (like ODIS) to perform a thorough scan, check live data, and accurately diagnose whether the mechatronics unit, clutch packs, or other internal components are at fault. They can also perform necessary software updates or adaptations.
