Vehicle: 2019 Audi Q5

Hi everyone,

Both the ABS and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning lights have illuminated on my dashboard in my 2019 Audi Q5. This happened suddenly while driving, and they've stayed on since. The car seems to be driving fine, but I'm concerned about these critical safety systems being offline.

It has about 45,000 miles. I haven't noticed any changes in braking performance, but I know these systems are important. What could be causing both lights to come on simultaneously? Is this something I can check myself, or does it need a professional diagnosis?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and ESC (Electronic Stability Control) warning lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2019 Audi Q5, it typically indicates a shared component failure or a central system malfunction, as these systems are interconnected. Here are the most common causes:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If a sensor fails, becomes dirty, or its wiring is damaged, the ABS/ESC module loses crucial data, causing both lights to come on. Common OBD codes for this issue include C0031 (Left Front Wheel Speed Sensor), C0034 (Right Front), C0037 (Left Rear), C003A (Right Rear), or similar codes indicating a circuit malfunction.
  2. ABS Control Module Failure: The ABS control module is the brain of both systems. If this module malfunctions, it can disable both ABS and ESC. This is a more expensive repair but can happen.
  3. Brake Fluid Level: While less common to trigger both, an extremely low brake fluid level can sometimes cause warnings related to the braking system. However, this usually triggers a separate brake warning light first.
  4. Wiring Issues: Damaged wiring or connectors to the wheel speed sensors or the ABS module can interrupt communication, leading to system warnings.
  5. Steering Angle Sensor: The ESC system uses input from the steering angle sensor to determine steering wheel position. A fault in this sensor can sometimes trigger ESC, and subsequently, ABS warnings.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. While your regular brakes may still function, the ABS and ESC systems are crucial for preventing wheel lock-up during hard braking and maintaining vehicle stability during evasive maneuvers. Driving without them significantly reduces your vehicle's safety features.
  • A professional diagnostic scan using an OBD-II scanner capable of reading ABS/ESC specific codes is essential. Generic scanners might only show basic engine codes, but an advanced scanner can pinpoint the exact wheel speed sensor or module fault. A technician can then inspect the sensor, wiring, or recommend further diagnosis of the ABS module.
