Vehicle: 2020 Audi Q5 Prestige

Hey everyone, I'm hoping for some advice on my 2020 Audi Q5 Prestige. It has about 40,000 miles on it, and for the past few weeks, I've been hearing a distinct clunking noise coming from the front end, especially when going over bumps or uneven surfaces at low speeds.

It's not a constant noise, but it's very noticeable when I hit a pothole or even just a slight dip in the road. It sounds like something is loose. The steering feels fine, and I don't notice any pulling, but the sound is definitely concerning.

Has anyone experienced something similar with their Q5 or other Audi models? What could be causing this? I'm trying to get an idea before I take it to the dealer. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer: A clunking noise from the front suspension, particularly over bumps, is a common indicator of worn or loose suspension components.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Sway Bar Links (Stabilizer Links): These are a very common culprit. The bushings or ball joints in the sway bar links can wear out, causing a clunking sound as the suspension moves.
    • Control Arm Bushings: Worn or torn bushings in the control arms (upper or lower) allow excessive movement, leading to clunking.
    • Shock Absorber Mounts: The top mounts for the shock absorbers can degrade, causing noise as the shock moves within its housing.
    • Ball Joints: Worn ball joints in the control arms or steering knuckles can also produce a clunking sound.
    • Loose Components: Less commonly, a loose bolt on a suspension component could be the cause, though this is usually checked during regular service.
  2. Initial Checks (Visual):

    • While difficult without lifting the car, sometimes you can visually inspect for obvious tears in rubber bushings or excessive play in components if you can safely rock the wheel when the car is stationary. Do not attempt to get under a car lifted only by a jack.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Any persistent clunking noise from the suspension should be inspected by a professional immediately. Worn suspension components can affect handling, tire wear, and potentially lead to more serious safety issues if they fail completely.
    • A mechanic can lift the vehicle, inspect all bushings, ball joints, and links for play or damage, and accurately pinpoint the source of the noise. Early diagnosis can prevent further damage to related components.
