Condensation in Rear Tail Light - 2019 Q5

Vehicle: 2019 Audi Q5 Premium

My 2019 Audi Q5 Premium has developed condensation inside the passenger-side rear tail light assembly. It's quite noticeable after rain or a car wash, and it doesn't seem to clear up completely. I've also noticed that some of the LED segments in that same tail light appear dimmer or are completely out sometimes.

Is this a common issue with the Q5? What's the best way to fix it?

Condensation inside the tail light assembly and failing LED segments are unfortunately somewhat common issues on Audi Q5 models, particularly in the 2016-2026 range. This problem is usually indicative of a compromised seal or a manufacturing defect.

Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. Seal Failure: The most common cause is a failing seal around the tail light assembly, allowing moisture to enter. This can be due to age, manufacturing defect, or minor impact.
  2. Cracked Housing: Even a hairline crack in the plastic housing, sometimes invisible to the naked eye, can allow water ingress.
  3. LED Module Failure: Once moisture gets inside, it can corrode the electrical connections or damage the LED modules themselves, leading to dimming or complete failure of segments.
  4. Ventilation Blockage: Less common, but blocked ventilation holes (designed to allow minor moisture to escape) can exacerbate the problem.

When to See a Shop: While primarily a cosmetic issue, moisture inside the tail light can lead to electrical shorts and complete light failure, which is a safety concern. If your LEDs are failing, it's time to address it.

Repair Steps (What to expect):

  • Inspection: A technician will inspect the tail light for visible cracks, damage, or seal issues. They might remove the assembly to check the rear seal and wiring.
  • Drying and Resealing (Temporary/Limited Success): For minor condensation without LED failure, some might try to remove the assembly, dry it out thoroughly, and then reseal it with automotive-grade sealant. This is often a temporary fix.
  • Tail Light Assembly Replacement: The most reliable and common fix is to replace the entire tail light assembly. Once moisture has compromised the internal electronics or the seal is significantly damaged, replacement is usually the only long-term solution.
  • Wiring Check: They will also check the electrical connector and wiring for any signs of corrosion or damage.
  • No specific OBD codes are typically associated directly with tail light condensation or LED segment failure, as it's often a localized electrical/seal issue rather than a system-wide fault that triggers the main computer. However, a "bulb out" warning may appear on the dash if enough LEDs fail.

If your vehicle is still under warranty, this issue might be covered, so check with your Audi dealership.
