Vehicle: 2020 Audi Q5 Prestige

My 2020 Audi Q5 Prestige has been having intermittent issues with the MMI system. The screen will randomly freeze, sometimes for a few seconds, sometimes it completely blacks out and restarts itself. It's really frustrating, especially when I'm using navigation or trying to connect my phone via Apple CarPlay.

I've tried restarting the car, but the problem persists. Is this a known bug, or something more serious?

MMI issues, including freezing and restarting, are not uncommon across various Audi models, including the Q5 (2016-2026). This can be caused by a few different factors, ranging from software glitches to hardware problems.

Causes & Diagnostics:

  1. Software Glitch: The MMI system's software can sometimes encounter bugs or become corrupted, leading to erratic behavior.
  2. Module Malfunction: The MMI control unit itself (often located in the glovebox or dashboard) can fail or have intermittent connection issues.
  3. Overheating: Less common, but prolonged use or high ambient temperatures can sometimes cause the MMI unit to overheat and temporarily malfunction.
  4. Connectivity Issues: If it primarily happens with CarPlay/Android Auto, it could be related to the USB port, cable, or phone compatibility.

When to See a Shop: If a hard reset doesn't resolve the issue, or if it becomes more frequent, it's best to have an Audi dealership or specialist diagnose the problem. This is especially true if the issue affects safety-critical functions like backup cameras or navigation.

Repair Steps (What to expect):

  • Hard Reset: First, try a hard reset of the MMI system. For many Q5 models, this involves holding down the volume knob (or the MMI control knob) and the top two buttons next to it (e.g., NAV/MAP and RADIO) simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds until the screen goes black and restarts.
  • Software Update: An Audi dealership can check if there are any pending software updates for your MMI system. Updates often fix known bugs.
  • Diagnostic Scan: A shop will perform a full diagnostic scan using VCDS or ODIS to check for fault codes related to the MMI unit or other connected modules. Common codes might include B2000 (Control Module Fault) or specific codes related to communication errors.
  • Module Replacement: If software updates and resets don't work, the MMI control unit may need to be replaced. This is a more costly repair.
  • Wiring Inspection: Less likely but possible, wiring leading to the MMI unit could be faulty.

Before heading to the shop, ensure your phone's software is updated if the issue primarily occurs with phone integration.
