Vehicle: 2022 Audi Q5 45 TFSI S line

Hello fellow Audi owners,

I'm having persistent issues with the MMI system in my 2022 Audi Q5 45 TFSI S line. The screen frequently freezes, becoming unresponsive to touch or the control knob. When this happens, my Bluetooth connection often drops, and if I'm using Apple CarPlay, that freezes too.

Sometimes it resolves itself after a few minutes, or if I restart the car, but it's becoming more frequent and extremely annoying, especially on longer drives when I rely on navigation and music. There are no warning lights on the dash related to this.

Has anyone experienced similar MMI glitches with their newer Q5? Is there a known fix or a software update I should be looking for? Any advice would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

MMI (Multi Media Interface) freezing and Bluetooth disconnects on a newer 2022 Audi Q5 are frustrating, especially with the reliance on these systems for navigation and entertainment. These issues are typically software-related, but can occasionally point to a hardware fault.

Common Causes for MMI Glitches:

  1. Software Bugs: Like any complex computer system, the MMI can suffer from software bugs that cause freezing, slow response, or connectivity issues.
  2. Corrupted Data: Sometimes, corrupted data from connected devices (phones, USB drives) or internal MMI memory can cause instability.
  3. Module Malfunction: Less commonly, one of the MMI control modules (e.g., the main unit, Bluetooth module) could be failing.
  4. Overheating: While rare, extreme temperatures can sometimes affect electronic module performance.
  5. Loose Connections: A loose electrical connection to the MMI unit or its components could cause intermittent issues.

What to do:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: Try performing an MMI hard reset. This usually involves holding down a combination of buttons (often the navigation button, radio button, and the main MMI knob simultaneously for about 10-15 seconds) until the screen goes black and restarts. Consult your owner's manual for the exact procedure for your 2022 Q5.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Visit your Audi dealership. There might be an available software update for your MMI system that addresses known bugs and improves stability.
  3. Disconnect and Re-pair Devices: Delete your phone from the MMI's paired devices list and re-pair it. Also, try using a different phone to see if the issue persists, which could indicate a problem with your specific device.
  4. Clear MMI Cache/Settings: If available in the MMI settings, try clearing user data or resetting to factory defaults (note: this will erase saved destinations, radio presets, etc.).

When to See a Shop:

If the hard reset and re-pairing devices don't resolve the issue, or if the problem recurs frequently, it's best to take your Q5 to an authorized Audi service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools (ODIS) that can check for fault codes within the infotainment system, identify specific module failures, and perform necessary software updates or hardware replacements. Since your vehicle is a 2022 model, it should still be under warranty, making dealership service the most logical and cost-effective solution.
