Vehicle: 2018 Audi Q5 Prestige

Hey everyone,

I'm having a really annoying issue with the MMI system in my 2018 Audi Q5 Prestige. Lately, the screen has started flickering on and off intermittently, and sometimes it just completely freezes up. When it freezes, I can't control anything – radio, navigation, Apple CarPlay, nothing.

It seems to happen randomly, sometimes right after starting the car, other times after driving for a bit. I've tried restarting the car, and even doing the MMI reset (holding the volume knob and two other buttons), but the problem keeps coming back. It's making the car almost impossible to enjoy, especially on longer trips.

Has anyone else experienced this with their Q5 or similar Audi models? Any ideas what might be causing it or what I can check before taking it to the dealership? Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

MMI flickering and freezing issues are not uncommon in Audi vehicles, especially as they age. Here's a breakdown of potential causes and steps you can take:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: While you've tried the button combination, sometimes a more thorough reset is needed. Disconnect the car battery's negative terminal for 10-15 minutes, then reconnect it. This can sometimes clear stubborn software glitches.
  2. Check for Loose Connections: The MMI unit itself or its display might have a loose cable connection. This is harder to access without specialized tools, but a visual inspection around the screen area might reveal something obvious (though unlikely).
  3. Software Update: Ensure your MMI software is up to date. Dealerships often have access to the latest firmware which can resolve known bugs that cause these symptoms.

Common Causes:

  • Software Glitches: The most frequent cause. Corrupted files or bugs in the MMI operating system can lead to instability.
  • Hardware Failure: Less common, but the MMI control unit or the display screen itself could be failing. Capacitors or internal components can degrade over time.
  • Power Supply Issues: Fluctuations in voltage or a failing power supply unit for the MMI can cause intermittent operation.
  • Loose Wiring: Connections behind the dashboard or to the MMI unit can become loose, leading to intermittent signal loss.

When to See a Shop:

If the issue persists after a hard battery reset and you've confirmed no obvious loose connections, it's time to visit an Audi specialist or dealership. They have diagnostic tools (like ODIS) that can read specific fault codes related to the MMI system (e.g., 03075 - Display Unit for Information Electronics (J685) - No Signal/Communication or 02251 - MMI Control Head (J523) - No Signal/Communication). They can perform deeper diagnostics, update firmware, or recommend replacement of the MMI unit or screen if hardware failure is confirmed. Ignoring it can lead to further degradation and loss of essential vehicle functions.
