Vehicle: 2019 Audi Q5 2.0T Prestige

Hi everyone,

I'm having some trouble with my 2019 Audi Q5 2.0T Prestige. Lately, I've noticed a rough idle, especially when the engine is cold, and occasionally I feel a slight hesitation or misfire during acceleration. The check engine light came on briefly a few times but then went off, and now it's back on permanently.

I'm worried about potential engine damage. Could this be spark plugs, ignition coils, or something more serious? I'm due for a service soon, but this feels like it needs attention sooner. Any thoughts or similar experiences with the 2.0T engine?

Thanks for any help!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough idling and misfires are common symptoms that can stem from several engine-related issues in the Audi 2.0T engine. The intermittent Check Engine Light (CEL) suggests the problem might be developing or is specific to certain operating conditions.

Here are the most common causes and recommended actions:

  1. Common Causes:

    • Ignition System Components:
      • Spark Plugs: Worn or fouled spark plugs are a very common cause of misfires and rough idle. They should be replaced according to Audi's service schedule.
      • Ignition Coils: A failing ignition coil can cause misfires in a specific cylinder. OBD codes like P0301, P0302, etc., (Misfire Detected in Cylinder X) will pinpoint the affected cylinder.
    • Fuel System Issues:
      • Fuel Injectors: Clogged or faulty fuel injectors can lead to an improper air/fuel mixture, causing misfires.
      • Low Fuel Pressure: A failing fuel pump or regulator can starve the engine of fuel.
    • Vacuum Leaks: Leaks in vacuum lines or intake manifold gaskets can introduce unmetered air, disrupting the air/fuel ratio.
    • PCV Valve: A faulty PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) valve can cause vacuum leaks, oil consumption, and rough idle.
    • Carbon Buildup: Direct injection engines like the 2.0T are prone to carbon buildup on intake valves, which can restrict airflow and cause misfires, especially at idle.
  2. Initial Steps:

    • Scan for Codes: Get your Q5 scanned for DTCs immediately. Misfire codes (P030X) will indicate which cylinder is misfiring, narrowing down the potential cause.
    • Check Service History: Review when spark plugs and ignition coils were last replaced.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • Promptly: Since the CEL is now permanently on and you're experiencing misfires, it's advisable to have it inspected soon. Continued driving with misfires can damage the catalytic converter.
    • Professional Diagnosis: An Audi specialist can perform a comprehensive diagnosis, including checking spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel pressure, vacuum system, and potentially performing a compression test or inspecting for carbon buildup. They can also use specialized tools to diagnose injector issues.
