Vehicle: 2022 Audi Q7 45 TFSI Premium Plus

Hi everyone,

I'm experiencing a really annoying problem with my 2022 Audi Q7 45 TFSI Premium Plus. The keyless entry and start system (Advanced Key) has become intermittent. Sometimes it works perfectly, and other times I have to manually unlock the car with the physical key and then place the key in the designated spot to start it.

It's not consistent, which makes it hard to diagnose. I've tried replacing the key fob battery in both keys, but the issue persists. Could this be a sensor problem in the door handles, or perhaps an issue with the immobilizer system or a control module?

It's a relatively new car, so I'm surprised to be having this kind of electrical glitch. Any thoughts or similar experiences with your Q7s?

Intermittent keyless entry and start issues on a 2022 Audi Q7, especially after replacing key fob batteries, point towards a problem with the vehicle's Advanced Key system components. This system relies on multiple antennas and control modules.

  1. Key Fob Signal Interference: While you replaced batteries, ensure there's no external interference. Keep the key fob away from other electronic devices (phones, smartwatches) that might interfere with its signal, especially when trying to start the car.
  2. Door Handle Sensors: The Advanced Key system uses sensors in the door handles to detect the key fob's presence. If one or more of these sensors are faulty, dirty, or have a wiring issue, it can cause intermittent recognition. Water intrusion or physical damage can affect these.
  3. Interior Antennas: The Q7 has several interior antennas that detect the key fob's location for starting the vehicle. If one of these antennas or its wiring is faulty, the car might not 'see' the key inside, requiring you to place it in the backup slot.
  4. Comfort Control Module (CCM) / Access/Start Authorization Module: These modules are central to the Advanced Key system. A software glitch or an internal fault in one of these modules can lead to intermittent operation. They process the signals from the key fob and authorize entry/start.
  5. Vehicle Battery Voltage: While less likely if the car starts reliably with the backup method, low overall vehicle battery voltage can sometimes cause seemingly unrelated electrical gremlins, including issues with sensitive systems like keyless entry.

Relevant OBD Codes: Issues with the Advanced Key system will typically store 'B' (Body) or 'U' (Network Communication) codes in the Access/Start Authorization module or the Comfort Control Module. Examples include:

  • B1A00: Key Immobilizer System Malfunction
  • B1A01: Key Not Recognized
  • B1A02: Antenna for Access/Start Authorization System Fault
  • U0140: Lost Communication with Body Control Module

When to See a Shop: Given that your Q7 is a 2022 model, it's likely still under warranty. This issue warrants a visit to an authorized Audi dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools (like ODIS) that can read specific fault codes from the Advanced Key system's modules, test the functionality of individual door handle sensors and interior antennas, and perform any necessary software updates or module replacements. This is not typically a DIY fix due to the system's complexity and security features.
