Vehicle: 2020 Audi Q7 Prestige

Hi all,

I'm having an issue with the air suspension on my 2020 Audi Q7 Prestige. Recently, I've been getting an 'Air Suspension Malfunction' warning on the MMI, and the vehicle doesn't seem to be leveling correctly. Sometimes the rear looks lower than usual, or it just feels off.

It's got about 40,000 miles on it. I've tried cycling the ignition and checking the drive select modes, but the warning persists. Has anyone experienced this with their Q7? What was the fix? I'm worried about driving it like this.

An 'Air Suspension Malfunction' on your 2020 Audi Q7 Prestige indicates a problem within the complex adaptive air suspension system. This system relies on several components to maintain ride height and comfort. Here are the most common culprits:

  1. Air Leaks: This is a very common issue. Leaks can occur in the air springs (bags), air lines, or connections. A small leak might cause the system to work harder, eventually leading to compressor failure, while a larger leak will cause noticeable sagging.
  2. Air Suspension Compressor: The compressor is responsible for generating the air pressure needed to inflate the air springs. If it's failing or has failed, it won't be able to maintain the correct pressure, leading to leveling issues and warnings. Common OBD codes related to the compressor might include C1000 (Control Module Malfunction) or codes indicating pressure issues.
  3. Ride Height Sensors: These sensors monitor the distance between the chassis and the wheels at each corner. If a sensor is faulty or its linkage is damaged, it can send incorrect signals to the control module, causing improper leveling or system errors.
  4. Air Suspension Control Module: While less common, the electronic control unit (ECU) for the air suspension can sometimes malfunction, leading to system errors and warnings.
  5. Relay Issues: A faulty relay for the air compressor can prevent it from turning on, mimicking a compressor failure.

When to see a shop:

  • Immediately. Driving with a compromised air suspension can affect handling, braking, and tire wear. It can also put additional strain on other suspension components.
  • A professional shop with Audi diagnostic tools (like VCDS or ODIS) can read specific fault codes (e.g., C10xx series) to pinpoint the exact component causing the malfunction. They can also perform leak tests and check sensor readings to accurately diagnose the problem.
