Vehicle: 2023 Audi Q7 3.0T Premium

Hi everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with the keyless entry and start system on my relatively new 2023 Audi Q7 3.0T Premium. Sometimes it works perfectly, but other times, when I try to open the door by touching the handle, nothing happens. I have to pull out the physical key and press the unlock button. The same goes for starting the car; sometimes it won't detect the key, and I get a 'Key Not Detected' message, forcing me to put the key in the emergency slot.

I've tried replacing the battery in both of my key fobs, but the problem persists. It's really inconsistent and seems to happen more often in certain locations, but not always. It's quite annoying for a new car to have this kind of glitch.

Has anyone experienced similar keyless entry/start problems with their newer Q7 or other Audi models? What was the fix? Any suggestions on what might be going on would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent keyless entry and start (Advanced Key) issues on newer Audis, like your 2023 Q7, can be particularly frustrating. While a new car, electrical glitches can still occur. Here's what to consider:

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Try Both Keys: You've already done this, but it's important to rule out a single faulty key fob.
  2. Check for Local Interference: Since it seems to happen more often in certain locations, consider if there's strong electromagnetic interference (e.g., cell towers, radio transmitters, industrial equipment) in those areas. This can temporarily block the key fob's signal.
  3. Inspect Key Fob: Ensure the key fob itself hasn't sustained any damage from drops or moisture, which could affect its internal antenna or components.

Common Causes:

  • Weak Key Fob Battery (Even New Ones): While you replaced them, ensure they are high-quality, fresh batteries. Sometimes new batteries can be old stock or low quality.
  • Interference: As mentioned, external RF interference is a common cause of intermittent keyless system failures.
  • Faulty Door Handle Sensors: The sensors in the door handles that detect your hand can fail, especially if exposed to harsh weather or physical impact. This would typically only affect entry, not start.
  • Antenna Issues: The vehicle has multiple antennas (e.g., in the trunk, center console, door pillars) that detect the key fob's presence. A faulty or obstructed antenna can lead to intermittent detection issues. OBD codes like B100B11 - Keyless Entry Antenna 1 - Short to Ground or B100C13 - Keyless Entry Antenna 2 - Open Circuit might appear.
  • Comfort Control Module (J393) or Gateway Module (J533) Glitch: These modules manage the keyless system. A software bug or internal fault could cause intermittent communication issues.
  • Wiring Harness Issues: Damaged or loose wiring to the door handle sensors or antennas can cause intermittent failures.

When to See a Shop:

Given that this is a 2023 model, it's highly recommended to take your Q7 to an authorized Audi dealership. They have specialized diagnostic tools (VCDS/ODIS) that can read specific fault codes related to the Advanced Key system, door handle sensors, and antenna modules. They can also check for any technical service bulletins (TSBs) related to known issues for your model year. Since it's a new vehicle, this issue should be covered under warranty, and prompt diagnosis will prevent further inconvenience.
