Vehicle: 2023 Audi S5 Sportback

Hi everyone,

I've got a relatively new 2023 Audi S5 Sportback, and I'm already hearing a concerning noise from the front end. Whenever I go over bumps, speed bumps, or uneven pavement, there's a distinct clunking sound coming from the front suspension, mostly on the passenger side.

The car only has about 15,000 miles on it, so I'm surprised to be hearing this already. It doesn't seem to affect handling, but the sound is definitely there and quite noticeable. It's not a squeak, more of a solid 'clunk'.

Is this a known issue with the B9.5 S5s? What should I be looking at? I'm hoping it's something simple and not a major suspension component already failing.

A clunking noise from the front suspension, even on a relatively new vehicle like your 2023 Audi S5 Sportback, is a sign that something isn't right. While it's early for major component failure, wear items or loose components can cause such sounds. Here are the most common culprits:

  1. Sway Bar End Links: These small links connect the sway bar to the suspension. Worn or loose end links are a very common cause of clunking noises over bumps. The bushings inside them can degrade, or the nuts can loosen.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: Audi S5s, like many performance vehicles, have multiple control arms in the front suspension. The rubber bushings within these arms can wear out prematurely, especially if exposed to harsh conditions, leading to play and clunking sounds. This is a frequent issue on Audis.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear, particularly the bearing, which allows the strut to turn with the steering. If this mount is failing, it can produce clunking or popping sounds, especially when turning or going over bumps.
  4. Loose Components: Sometimes, it can be as simple as a loose bolt on a suspension component, a brake caliper, or even something like a loose heat shield. A thorough visual inspection by a technician is crucial.
  5. Ball Joints: While less common on such a new vehicle, worn ball joints in the control arms can also cause clunking noises.

When to see a shop:

  • Soon: Any persistent clunking noise from the suspension should be investigated. While it might not immediately affect handling, it indicates a component that has play or is failing, which could eventually compromise safety or lead to more extensive repairs if left unaddressed. There are typically no OBD codes associated with mechanical suspension noises.
  • Audi Dealership/Specialist: Given the vehicle's age and under warranty, your first step should be to take it to an authorized Audi dealership. They can diagnose the issue, and if it's a manufacturing defect or premature wear, it should be covered under your warranty. They have specialized tools and experience with Audi suspension systems to accurately identify the source of the noise.
