Vehicle: 2018 Audi S5 Sportback Prestige

Hey everyone, I've been having a persistent issue with the MMI system in my 2018 Audi S5 Sportback Prestige. Lately, the screen will randomly freeze up, become unresponsive to touch or the control knob, and then sometimes completely restart itself. It's really frustrating, especially when I'm trying to use navigation or change music.

It seems to happen more frequently on longer drives, but it's not consistent. Sometimes it'll work fine for days, then act up multiple times in an hour. I've tried turning the car off and on, but that only provides a temporary fix, if any.

Has anyone else experienced this with their B9 S5? I'm wondering if it's a software glitch, a hardware issue, or something I can fix myself before taking it to the dealership. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

MMI system glitches are not uncommon across various Audi models, including the B9 S5. Here's what you can do to diagnose and potentially resolve the issue:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: Try resetting the MMI system. For most B9 S5 models, this involves pressing and holding the navigation/map button, the radio button, and the central MMI control knob simultaneously until the screen goes black and reboots. This can clear temporary software bugs.
  2. Check for Software Updates: Outdated MMI software can sometimes lead to instability. Visit your Audi dealership or use an OBD-II diagnostic tool with Audi-specific software (like Ross-Tech VCDS or OBDeleven) to check for available MMI firmware updates. Many dealerships offer these as part of routine service.
  3. Inspect SD Cards/USB Devices: If you frequently use external media, try removing any SD cards or USB drives from the MMI system. Corrupt media can sometimes interfere with the MMI's operation.

Common Causes:

  • Software Glitches: The most frequent cause of MMI freezing is a temporary software bug that a reset or update can fix.
  • Overheating: While less common, prolonged use or hot weather can sometimes cause the MMI control unit to overheat, leading to performance issues.
  • Hardware Failure: In some cases, the MMI control unit itself or related components (like the screen or wiring) might be failing.

When to See a Shop: If the hard reset and checking for updates do not resolve the issue, or if the problem recurs frequently, it's time to visit an authorized Audi service center. They have specialized diagnostic tools to pinpoint whether it's a software fault requiring a reflash, a faulty MMI control unit, or a wiring issue. There are typically no direct OBD-II codes for MMI freezing, but the dealership's diagnostic system can access specific infotainment control module fault codes.
