Vehicle: 2021 Audi SQ5 Premium Plus

Hi Audi community,

I'm having persistent problems with the MMI system in my 2021 Audi SQ5 Premium Plus. The screen frequently freezes, becoming unresponsive to touch, and sometimes it just completely blacks out for a few seconds before restarting. This is particularly frustrating when I'm using navigation or trying to change music.

On top of that, my Apple CarPlay connection is very unreliable. It constantly disconnects and reconnects, or sometimes it won't connect at all. I've tried different cables, restarting my phone, and even resetting the MMI system through its menu, but nothing seems to permanently fix it. It's making the driving experience really frustrating.

Has anyone with a 2021 or similar model year SQ5 experienced these kinds of MMI and CarPlay glitches? Is there a known software bug or a specific fix I should be aware of before I take it to the dealer? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

MMI freezing and unreliable Apple CarPlay in your 2021 Audi SQ5 Premium Plus are common complaints that often point to software or connectivity issues within the infotainment system. While frustrating, these are usually resolvable.

1. Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Perform a Hard Reset: Hold down the volume knob (or the dedicated MMI reset button, if your model has one) for about 10-15 seconds until the screen goes black and the system restarts. This can clear temporary glitches.
  2. Check for MMI Software Updates: Ensure your MMI system has the latest software version. Dealerships can check and perform these updates, which often include bug fixes for connectivity and stability.
  3. Isolate the CarPlay Issue:
    • Try a different iPhone or Android phone (using Android Auto) to see if the issue is phone-specific.
    • Ensure your phone's operating system is up-to-date.
    • Reset network settings on your phone.
    • Delete the car from your phone's CarPlay settings and vice-versa, then re-pair.
  4. Inspect USB Ports: Check the USB ports for any debris or damage, as this can affect wired CarPlay connections.

2. Common Causes:

  • Software Bugs: The most frequent cause for MMI glitches and CarPlay disconnects are bugs in the MMI's operating system. Updates often address these.
  • Module Malfunction: In rare cases, the MMI control unit itself (or a related module like the main infotainment unit) might be faulty, requiring repair or replacement.
  • Antenna Issues: For wireless CarPlay, a weak or faulty Wi-Fi/Bluetooth antenna in the vehicle could lead to intermittent connections.
  • Phone Compatibility/Software: Sometimes, issues can stem from the phone's software or a specific app interfering with CarPlay.

3. When to See a Shop:

If the hard reset and phone-side troubleshooting do not resolve the issues, it's time to visit an Audi dealership or a qualified independent Audi specialist.

  • Schedule an appointment if the problems are persistent and significantly impact your ability to use the infotainment system safely and effectively.
  • Mention all troubleshooting steps you've already taken to the technician. They will likely perform a diagnostic scan of the MMI system for specific fault codes (though software issues don't always generate standard OBD-II codes) and check for available software updates. If updates don't fix it, they may investigate hardware components.
