Vehicle: 2021 Audi SQ5 Prestige

Hey everyone,

I'm experiencing some concerning transmission behavior in my 2021 Audi SQ5 Prestige, which has about 30,000 miles on it. I've noticed that shifts, especially from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, can be quite rough or jerky, particularly when the car is cold or when I'm driving in Dynamic mode. Sometimes, there's also a noticeable hesitation when accelerating from a stop.

It's an 8-speed ZF automatic, and I didn't expect this kind of behavior from a relatively new car. No warning lights are on, but it just doesn't feel right. Has anyone else with a B9/B9.5 SQ5 experienced similar issues?

Any advice would be great!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Rough or jerky shifts and hesitation from a stop in a 2021 Audi SQ5, even with the robust ZF 8-speed automatic, can be concerning. While these transmissions are generally reliable, specific issues can arise.

Here’s a diagnostic approach:

  1. Transmission Adaptation Reset:
    • The ZF 8-speed transmission is adaptive, meaning it learns your driving style. Sometimes, a reset of these adaptations can resolve minor shifting anomalies. This typically requires a diagnostic tool (like VCDS or ODIS) and is best performed by a professional.
  2. Check Transmission Fluid Level and Condition:
    • Although the ZF 8HP is considered 'sealed for life' by some manufacturers, the fluid can degrade over time and affect shift quality. An incorrect fluid level or degraded fluid can cause issues. This check requires specific tools and procedures.
  3. Scan for Transmission Control Module (TCM) Codes:
    • Even without a check engine light, the Transmission Control Module (TCM) might have stored fault codes. Common codes related to shift quality or performance include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction Indicator Request) or specific gear ratio codes like P0729-P0736 (Incorrect Gear Ratio codes).
  4. Software Updates:
    • Audi occasionally releases software updates for the TCM to refine shift logic and address known issues. Your dealership can check for and apply these updates.

Common Causes:

  • Adaptive Learning Issues: The transmission's adaptive learning might have picked up an unusual driving pattern or could be 'confused,' leading to sub-optimal shifts.
  • Low or Degraded Transmission Fluid: Though less common on a 30k mile vehicle, fluid issues can impact shift quality.
  • Mechatronic Unit Issues: The mechatronic unit (the transmission's 'brain' and valve body) can sometimes develop internal issues, leading to rough shifts or hesitation. This is a more significant repair.
  • Engine-Related Issues: Less likely, but engine misfires or sensor issues (e.g., throttle position sensor) can sometimes indirectly affect transmission behavior.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: If the problem worsens significantly, or if you notice any new warning lights (especially a flashing 'D' or gear indicator), stop driving and have it towed to an Audi specialist.
  • As soon as possible: If the adaptation reset or software update doesn't resolve the issue, or if you suspect a fluid-related problem, take your SQ5 to an Audi dealership or a reputable independent shop specializing in Audi/VW transmissions. They have the specialized tools and expertise to properly diagnose and repair ZF 8HP transmission issues.
