Vehicle: 2019 BMW 440i Gran Coupe

Hi everyone,

I'm having a frustrating issue with the Comfort Access system on my 2019 BMW 440i Gran Coupe (F36). It's become very intermittent. Sometimes it works perfectly – I can touch the door handle to unlock, and the car recognizes the key fob when I press the start button. Other times, it completely fails. I have to use the physical key to unlock and then place the fob in the steering column slot to start the car.

I've already replaced the battery in both of my key fobs, thinking that was the obvious culprit, but the problem persists with both keys. It doesn't seem to be tied to a specific location either, as it happens at home, work, and various other places.

Has anyone else experienced this with their F36 or similar BMWs? Could it be an antenna issue, or maybe something with the car's battery or a module? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Common Causes:

  1. Key Fob Battery (Ruled Out): While you've replaced it, it's always the first suspect. Ensure you used a high-quality CR2032 battery.
  2. Vehicle Battery Health: A weak or aging car battery can cause various electrical gremlins, including intermittent issues with sensitive systems like Comfort Access. Low voltage can affect the signal strength of the car's antennas.
  3. Comfort Access Antennas: The car has multiple antennas (in door handles, bumpers, interior) that detect the key fob. One or more of these antennas could be faulty, have corroded connections, or be obstructed.
  4. Body Domain Controller (BDC/FEM) Module: The BDC (or Front Electronic Module on older F-series) is the central control unit for many body electronics, including Comfort Access. A fault within this module can cause intermittent operation.
  5. Interference: External radio frequency interference can sometimes temporarily disrupt the signal, though less likely if it's a consistent problem.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Check Car Battery: Have your car's main 12V battery tested for health and charge. Even if it starts the car, it might not be providing stable voltage for all systems.
  2. Inspect Door Handles: Visually inspect the door handles for any physical damage or signs of corrosion around the sensor areas. Sometimes water ingress can damage the integrated antenna.
  3. Test All Doors: See if the Comfort Access works consistently on any specific door (e.g., passenger side) but not others. This could help narrow down a faulty door handle antenna.

When to See a Shop: Since you've replaced the key fob batteries, and the issue is persistent, it's best to consult a BMW specialist or dealership. They can connect to the car's diagnostic system (ISTA) to read fault codes from the BDC module. Relevant codes might include 8040B8 - Comfort access: Antenna, interior, 8040B9 - Comfort access: Antenna, door handle, driver's side, or 8040C0 - Comfort access: Control unit internal fault. These codes will help identify if an antenna is faulty, if there's a wiring issue, or if the BDC module itself needs attention. Replacing Comfort Access components often requires programming.
