Vehicle: 2022 BMW M3 Competition

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2022 BMW M3 Competition, and I've started hearing an annoying metallic rattle coming from the rear exhaust area. It's most noticeable at certain RPMs, especially when decelerating, or sometimes when going over bumps. It sounds like something is loose or vibrating.

I'm suspecting it might be one of the exhaust flaps or its actuator. Is this a common issue on the G80 M3? The car only has about 15,000 miles on it, so I'm a bit surprised to hear this already. Has anyone else dealt with this, and what was the fix? Thanks for any help!

An annoying metallic rattle from the exhaust of your 2022 BMW M3 Competition, especially at low mileage, is definitely something to investigate. Exhaust flap rattles are a relatively common complaint across various performance vehicles, including BMW M models.

  1. Visual Inspection: Start by visually inspecting the exhaust system, particularly the rear mufflers where the exhaust flaps are located. Look for any loose hangers, clamps, or heat shields that could be vibrating. Gently tap different sections of the exhaust to try and replicate the sound.
  2. Exhaust Flap Actuators: The M3 Competition has electronically controlled exhaust flaps. The rattle can come from the flap itself (if it's loose on its pivot), or from the actuator mechanism. With the car off, try to manually move the flaps (if accessible) to see if there's any play or looseness.
  3. Actuator Function Check: Have someone start the car while you observe the flaps. They should open and close. If one isn't moving correctly, or if there's excessive play in the linkage, it could be the source of the rattle.
  4. Lubrication: Sometimes, the pivot points of the exhaust flaps can become dry or corroded, leading to squeaks or rattles. A high-temperature lubricant might temporarily alleviate the issue, but it's not a permanent fix if there's wear.
  5. Internal Muffler Baffles: In rare cases, internal baffles within the muffler can come loose, causing a rattle. This is harder to diagnose without disassembling the muffler.

Common OBD Codes: Exhaust flap rattles are typically mechanical and do not usually trigger specific OBD-II fault codes unless the actuator itself has an electrical fault (e.g., open circuit, short circuit).

When to See a Shop: Since your 2022 BMW M3 Competition is still under warranty, it's highly recommended to take it to a BMW dealership. They can properly diagnose the source of the rattle, whether it's a faulty exhaust flap actuator, a loose flap, or another component. They have the tools and expertise to address this under warranty, ensuring the correct repair is performed without you incurring costs.
