Vehicle: 2018 BMW X5 M Sport

Hi all,

I've got a 2018 BMW X5 M Sport, and lately, I've been hearing a distinct clunking noise from the front end, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It's not a constant noise, only when the suspension is articulating.

The car has about 70,000 miles on it. It feels like it's coming from both sides, but maybe a bit more pronounced on the driver's side. The steering feels fine, no pulling or excessive play, but the noise is definitely concerning.

Has anyone experienced this with their X5? What should I be looking for? Could it be something simple, or am I looking at a major repair? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hello Sarah,

A clunking noise from the front suspension over bumps is a common complaint and can stem from several components. Given your 2018 BMW X5 M Sport has 70,000 miles, wear and tear on suspension parts is a strong possibility. Here’s what typically causes this and what to investigate:

  1. Common Culprits for Clunking:

    • Sway Bar End Links: These are a very common source of clunking. The ball joints on the end links can wear out, causing play and noise when the suspension moves.
    • Control Arm Bushings: BMWs, especially heavier models like the X5, can experience wear in the control arm bushings. When these rubber components degrade, they allow metal-on-metal contact or excessive movement, leading to clunks.
    • Ball Joints: Worn lower or upper ball joints in the control arms can also create a clunking sound as they lose their tight fit.
    • Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mounts of the struts can wear out, causing noise, particularly when turning the steering wheel or going over bumps. The strut bearing allows the strut to rotate, and if it's failing, it can clunk.
    • Loose Components: Less common, but sometimes a loose bolt on a suspension component or even a heat shield can mimic a suspension clunk.
  2. What to Check (or have checked):

    • A technician will typically lift the vehicle and visually inspect all rubber bushings for cracks or tears, and check for play in ball joints and tie rod ends. They'll also check the sway bar end links by trying to move them by hand.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • It's highly recommended to have your 2018 X5 M Sport inspected by a professional technician as soon as possible. While a clunk might seem minor, worn suspension components can affect handling, tire wear, and potentially compromise safety, especially at higher speeds or during emergency maneuvers. A shop can accurately pinpoint the source of the noise and recommend the necessary repairs to restore your vehicle's ride quality and safety.
