Vehicle: 2021 BMW 750i

Hi everyone,

I've been noticing a couple of issues with the HVAC system in my 2021 BMW 750i (G11 chassis). First, the AC airflow seems weaker than it used to be, even when I crank it up. It's not blowing as cold as I'd expect either, but the main concern is the reduced flow.

Second, there's a distinct musty, almost mildew-like smell coming from the vents, especially when I first turn on the AC. It eventually fades a bit, but it's really unpleasant.

I'm thinking it might be the cabin air filter, but could there be something else going on? Any DIY tips for addressing this on a 7 Series?

Weak AC airflow and a musty smell are classic signs of a clogged cabin air filter and/or microbial growth in the HVAC system, particularly on the evaporator coil. Here’s how to tackle these issues on your 2021 BMW 750i:

  1. Replace the Cabin Air Filter(s):

    • Location: On the G11 7 Series, the cabin air filters are typically located behind the glove box or in the passenger footwell area. Some models might have two filters. Consult your owner's manual or a specific DIY guide for your exact model year.
    • Procedure: This is a straightforward DIY. Remove the necessary trim panels or screws to access the filter housing. Note the direction of airflow indicated by an arrow on the old filter and install the new filter in the same orientation. A clogged filter severely restricts airflow and can contribute to odors.
  2. Address the Musty Smell (Evaporator Cleaning):

    • Cause: The musty smell is almost always caused by mold, mildew, or bacteria growing on the evaporator coil, which is a cold, damp environment. This happens when moisture doesn't fully drain or dry out.
    • Procedure: You'll need an HVAC evaporator cleaner/deodorizer spray. These products typically come with a long straw. You'll spray the foam directly into the evaporator drain tube (usually accessible from underneath the car) or through the cabin air filter housing after removing the filter. Follow the product instructions carefully, ensuring the foam reaches the evaporator coil. Let it sit, then run the AC on high with windows open to dry it out.
  3. Preventative Measures:

    • Run Fan Before Shutting Off: A few minutes before reaching your destination, turn off the AC compressor (A/C button off) but leave the fan running on high. This helps dry out the evaporator coil, preventing moisture buildup and microbial growth.
    • Regular Filter Replacement: Replace your cabin air filter annually or every 15,000 miles, whichever comes first, especially if you drive in dusty or humid environments.

Common Causes:

  • Clogged cabin air filter(s).
  • Mold/mildew growth on the evaporator coil due to moisture.
  • Blocked evaporator drain tube (less common for smell, more for water in footwell).

When to See a Shop: If replacing the cabin air filter and cleaning the evaporator doesn't resolve the weak airflow or the smell, or if the AC is not blowing cold at all, it's time to visit a professional. This could indicate a more serious issue such as:

  • A failing blower motor.
  • A refrigerant leak (which would affect cooling performance).
  • A faulty AC compressor.
  • A blockage in the AC system that requires specialized tools to diagnose and repair.
