Vehicle: 2016 BMW M235i

Hi everyone,

I've got a 2016 BMW M235i (F22) and recently, the ABS and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) warning lights have come on simultaneously on my dashboard. They appeared while I was driving normally, not after any sudden braking or hard cornering. The car feels a bit off, like the traction control isn't there, and the brakes don't feel quite right either.

I've checked the brake fluid level, and it seems fine. I haven't noticed any leaks or strange noises from the wheels. I'm worried about driving it with these critical safety systems disabled. Is this a common issue for the M235i or F22 chassis?

What could be causing these lights to come on together? And is it safe to drive to a local shop, or should I consider getting it towed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

When both the ABS (Anti-lock Braking System) and DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) warning lights illuminate simultaneously on your 2016 BMW M235i, it indicates a fault within these interconnected safety systems. These systems rely heavily on wheel speed sensors, and a common failure point affects both.

Common Causes:

  1. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure: This is the most frequent culprit. Each wheel has a sensor that monitors its rotational speed. If one fails, the DSC/ABS module loses critical data, disabling both systems. These sensors can fail due to contamination, damage, or internal electrical faults.
  2. ABS/DSC Module Failure: The control module itself, which processes sensor data and controls the systems, can fail. This is less common but more expensive to fix.
  3. Wiring Harness Damage: Damaged or corroded wiring to a wheel speed sensor or the ABS/DSC module can interrupt signals.
  4. Tone Ring Damage: The tone ring (or reluctor ring) is a toothed wheel that the wheel speed sensor reads. If it's damaged (e.g., cracked, corroded, or missing teeth), the sensor will get incorrect readings.
  5. Low Brake Fluid (less likely if checked): While you've checked this, very low fluid can sometimes trigger related warnings.

OBD Codes to Look For:

  • 5DE0 / 5DE1: Wheel speed sensor, front left / front right, signal faulty.
  • 5DF0 / 5DF1: Wheel speed sensor, rear left / rear right, signal faulty.
  • Codes related to the DSC control unit or internal faults (e.g., 5E20).

When to See a Shop:

  • Driving with ABS/DSC lights on is not recommended for extended periods. While your regular brakes will still function, you will not have the benefit of ABS (preventing wheel lock-up during hard braking) or DSC (preventing skids and loss of traction). This significantly compromises vehicle safety, especially in adverse conditions.
  • You should drive directly to a trusted BMW specialist or dealership. If the drive is short and conditions are good, it's generally safe to drive carefully. If it's a longer distance, or if you feel unsafe, consider towing.
  • A diagnostic scan using BMW-specific tools (like ISTA) is crucial. The fault codes will precisely identify which wheel speed sensor (or other component) is faulty, allowing for targeted repair.
