Vehicle: 2021 BMW M440i

Hey everyone,

I'm having a problem with the adaptive headlights on my 2021 BMW M440i (G22). I keep getting an 'Adaptive Headlight Malfunction' warning on the dash, and it seems like the headlights are stuck in a fixed position – they don't turn with the steering wheel anymore. The high beams still work, but the adaptive function is definitely off.

It started happening a few weeks ago and now it's pretty consistent. I've tried restarting the car, but the warning always comes back. Is this a known issue with the G22 4-series? Could it be a sensor, a module, or something else entirely? Any insights would be super helpful!

The 'Adaptive Headlight Malfunction' warning on your 2021 BMW M440i (G22) indicates a problem with the Adaptive Front-lighting System (AFS). This system uses sensors, control modules, and stepper motors to adjust headlight aim based on steering input and vehicle speed.

  1. AFS Control Module: Each headlight assembly contains an AFS control module (often called the 'headlight module' or 'LED driver module'). These modules are prone to failure, especially if moisture gets inside the headlight housing. Fault codes like 8041B0 (AFS control unit internal fault) or 8041B1 (AFS communication error) are common.
  2. Stepper Motors: Within the headlight assembly, small stepper motors are responsible for physically moving the headlight projectors. If one of these motors fails or gets jammed, the adaptive function will cease. There might not be a direct OBD code for a 'stuck motor,' but the AFS module will report an inability to achieve the commanded position.
  3. Level Sensors: The AFS system also relies on ride height sensors (usually one on the front and one on the rear axle) to determine the car's pitch and adjust headlight leveling. A faulty ride height sensor or its wiring can cause adaptive issues, though this usually manifests as incorrect leveling rather than a complete adaptive failure. Fault codes like 480700 (Level sensor signal invalid) might appear.
  4. Wiring/Connectors: Damaged or corroded wiring and connectors leading to the headlight assembly or AFS module can interrupt communication and power, leading to malfunctions.

When to See a Shop: Diagnosing adaptive headlight issues typically requires specialized BMW diagnostic software (ISTA) to read specific fault codes from the AFS module. These codes will usually pinpoint whether the issue is with a specific module, a motor, or a sensor. Given that the headlights are a critical safety component, it's strongly recommended to have your M440i inspected by a BMW dealership or a qualified independent BMW specialist. They can accurately diagnose the problem and perform the necessary repairs, which often involve replacing the faulty AFS module or, in some cases, the entire headlight assembly.
