Vehicle: 2019 BMW 340i xDrive

Hey everyone, I'm getting a bit worried about my 2019 BMW 340i (G20 chassis). Lately, I've noticed a distinct smell of burning oil, especially after a drive. When I checked under the car, there are a few small drips on my garage floor. It's not a huge puddle, but enough to concern me. The car has about 60k miles on it.

Is this a common issue with the B58 engine? What should I be looking for? I'm hoping it's not something major, but I want to address it before it gets worse.

It sounds like you're experiencing a common issue with BMW's B58 engine, particularly as vehicles approach or pass the 60,000-mile mark. Oil leaks are a known reliability concern for many modern BMW engines.

  1. Common Causes:

    • Valve Cover Gasket (VCG): This is a very common failure point. The plastic valve cover can warp, or the rubber gasket can harden and crack over time, leading to leaks, often visible around the top of the engine or dripping down the sides.
    • Oil Filter Housing Gasket (OFHG): Another frequent culprit. A failing OFHG can leak oil down the front of the engine, often onto the serpentine belt, which can then spray oil around the engine bay and create a burning smell as it hits hot exhaust components.
    • Oil Pan Gasket: Less common than the VCG or OFHG on the B58, but still a possibility, especially if the drips are lower down and more central under the engine.
  2. Symptoms to Watch For:

    • Distinct burning oil smell, especially after driving or when the engine is hot.
    • Visible oil drips or puddles under the car.
    • Smoke from the engine bay (if oil is dripping onto hot exhaust manifolds).
    • Potentially, a slightly lower oil level on your iDrive oil check, though early leaks might not show this significantly.
  3. When to See a Shop:

    • You should have this inspected by a qualified BMW specialist as soon as possible. While a small drip might seem minor, oil leaks can escalate quickly.
    • Risk of Damage: Leaking oil can degrade rubber components like drive belts, potentially causing them to fail prematurely. If oil drips onto electrical components, it can cause shorts or damage. Most critically, if the leak becomes severe and the oil level drops too low, it can lead to catastrophic engine damage.
    • Diagnosis: A professional will typically perform a thorough visual inspection, often using a UV dye in the oil to pinpoint the exact source of the leak. They can also check for any relevant Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) that might apply to your specific model year and engine.
