Vehicle: 2018 Buick Enclave Premium

Hey everyone,

My 2018 Buick Enclave Premium, with about 85,000 miles, just threw a Check Engine Light. I scanned it with my OBD-II reader, and it's showing a P0420 code: 'Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)'.

The car seems to be running fine, no noticeable loss of power or strange noises. Fuel economy might be slightly worse, but it's hard to tell for sure. I'm wondering if this is something I can tackle myself or if it's definitely a trip to the dealership. Any common causes for this on the Enclave?

I've heard it could be anything from an O2 sensor to a failing catalytic converter, which sounds expensive. Any advice on how to diagnose this further before I start throwing parts at it?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

The P0420 code on your 2018 Buick Enclave indicates that the catalytic converter on Bank 1 is not performing efficiently enough. While it often points to the converter itself, there are several other potential causes that should be investigated first.

Here's a diagnostic approach:

  1. Check for Exhaust Leaks: An exhaust leak before or near the upstream O2 sensor can cause it to read incorrectly, leading the PCM to believe the converter is inefficient. Listen for hissing sounds or look for soot around exhaust joints.
  2. Inspect O2 Sensors: Both the upstream (pre-cat) and downstream (post-cat) oxygen sensors play a crucial role. A faulty O2 sensor, especially the downstream one, can trigger a P0420. While less common, a failing upstream sensor can also affect fuel trim and indirectly impact converter efficiency. A scan tool capable of live data can show O2 sensor readings; the downstream sensor's voltage should be relatively stable compared to the fluctuating upstream sensor.
  3. Evaluate Engine Performance: Issues like misfires (P030x codes), excessive oil consumption, or rich/lean fuel conditions can damage the catalytic converter over time. Ensure your engine is running optimally, with no other pending codes.
  4. Fuel Quality: Poor quality fuel or consistent use of lower octane than recommended can sometimes contribute to converter issues, though this is less common for a direct P0420.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you lack the tools or expertise to perform the above diagnostics, especially live data monitoring of O2 sensors.
  • If you identify an exhaust leak that requires welding or specialized repair.
  • If, after ruling out other causes, the catalytic converter is confirmed to be failing. This is a significant repair and often requires professional installation to ensure proper function and warranty compliance.
  • If the Check Engine Light is flashing, indicating a severe misfire that could cause further damage to the catalytic converter.
