Vehicle: 2019 Buick Enclave Premium

My 2019 Buick Enclave Premium has developed a really annoying clunking sound from the front end, especially when going over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It sounds like something is loose and it's getting worse.

I've checked for anything obvious, but can't pinpoint it. It's got about 60k miles on it and this just started a few weeks ago. It's more noticeable when turning or hitting bumps on one side.

Could this be a common issue with the Enclave? What should I be looking for?

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A clunking noise from the front end of your 2019 Buick Enclave Premium, especially over bumps, is a common symptom of worn suspension components. Given your mileage, several parts could be at fault.

Here are the most common causes and steps to diagnose:

  1. Sway Bar Links: These are a very common culprit. The bushings or ball joints on the sway bar end links can wear out, causing a clunking sound as the suspension articulates. They are relatively inexpensive to replace.
  2. Control Arm Bushings: The bushings in the lower or upper control arms can deteriorate, leading to excessive movement and noise. This often presents as a deeper thud or clunk.
  3. Strut Mounts/Bearings: Worn strut mounts or bearings can cause a clunk, especially when turning or going over uneven surfaces. If the strut itself is also worn, it might contribute to the noise and affect ride quality.
  4. Ball Joints: While less common than sway bar links, worn lower ball joints can also produce a clunking sound and are a critical safety component.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediate Inspection: Any persistent clunking noise from the suspension should be inspected by a qualified mechanic promptly. Worn suspension components can compromise handling, braking, and overall safety.
  • Difficulty Diagnosing: If you're unable to visually identify the source of the noise or if you lack the tools/experience to safely inspect suspension components, a professional diagnosis is essential. They can put the vehicle on a lift and use pry bars to check for play in various parts.
  • Alignment Check: After replacing any major suspension component, a wheel alignment is highly recommended to ensure proper handling and tire wear.
