Vehicle: 2018 Buick Enclave Premium

My 2018 Buick Enclave Premium with about 70,000 miles has started acting strange. Lately, the transmission feels like it's shifting really hard, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear, and sometimes it hesitates before engaging a gear. It's making me a bit nervous about driving it.

I've also noticed a slight lurch when slowing down. I'm worried it might be a major transmission problem. Has anyone else experienced this with their Enclave? What should I be looking for?

  1. Understand the 9-Speed Transmission: The 2018 Buick Enclave often features GM's 9T50 or 9T65 9-speed automatic transmission. Early versions of these transmissions, particularly in 2017-2019 models, were known to exhibit issues like hard shifts, hesitation, and lurching due to software calibration, valve body issues, or internal component wear.
  2. Check for Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs): Buick has released TSBs related to transmission shift quality for these models. A dealership can check your VIN for applicable software updates or specific repair procedures. Often, a software reflash can significantly improve shift feel.
  3. Fluid Level and Condition: While modern transmissions are often sealed, an incorrect fluid level or degraded fluid can cause issues. A professional can check the transmission fluid level and condition, although this typically requires specific diagnostic tools. Low fluid can cause slipping and hard shifts.
  4. Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs): If the check engine light is on, or if the transmission is acting up, scan for codes. Common transmission-related codes include P0700 (Transmission Control System Malfunction) which indicates a general transmission fault, and more specific codes like P0716 (Input/Turbine Speed Sensor Circuit Range/Performance) or P0729 (Gear 6 Incorrect Ratio).
  5. When to See a Shop: Given the nature of transmission problems, it's highly recommended to have your Enclave inspected by a qualified mechanic or Buick dealership as soon as possible. Continuing to drive with significant transmission issues can lead to more severe and costly damage. They can perform a thorough diagnosis, check for TSBs, and recommend the necessary repairs, which might range from a software update to valve body replacement or, in rare cases, transmission overhaul.
