Vehicle: 2016 Buick Encore FWD

Hi everyone,

I'm having a worrying issue with my 2016 Buick Encore, equipped with the 1.4L turbocharged engine. Recently, I've noticed a significant loss of power, especially when accelerating onto the highway or trying to pass. The car feels sluggish, almost like the turbo isn't kicking in at all.

To make matters worse, there's a distinct whistling or whining noise coming from the engine bay, particularly when I'm under acceleration. It's not a belt squeal; it sounds more like air escaping or a turbine spinning incorrectly. The check engine light hasn't come on yet, which is confusing.

Could this be a turbo issue? Or something else entirely? Any advice from other Encore owners would be greatly appreciated!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A sudden loss of power combined with a whistling or whining noise on a 2016 Buick Encore 1.4L turbo engine strongly suggests a problem within the turbocharger system. The lack of a check engine light initially can be misleading, as some issues might not trigger a code immediately or might be pending.

Common Causes & Diagnostic Steps:

  1. Turbocharger Failure:

    • Damaged Turbine/Compressor Wheel: Internal damage to the turbo's rotating components can cause the whistling sound and reduce boost pressure, leading to power loss.
    • Bearing Failure: Worn bearings within the turbo can cause noise and eventually lead to complete failure.
  2. Boost Leak:

    • Cracked Intercooler Hose/Pipe: A common issue where a hose or pipe connecting the turbo to the intercooler, or the intercooler to the throttle body, develops a crack or comes loose. This allows boost pressure to escape, causing the whistling and power loss.
    • Faulty Wastegate Actuator: If the wastegate isn't closing properly, boost pressure will escape, leading to underboost.
    • P0299 Code: If a check engine light does come on, a P0299 (Turbocharger/Supercharger Underboost Condition) is a very common code associated with these symptoms.
  3. PCV System Issues: The 1.4L Ecotec engine is known for PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system issues, particularly with the intake manifold check valve. A failure here can create a vacuum leak that mimics boost leaks or causes other drivability issues, sometimes accompanied by a whistling sound.

  4. Exhaust Leaks: A leak in the exhaust manifold or piping near the turbo could also produce a whistling sound, though it's less likely to cause a significant power loss unless it's a very large leak affecting turbo spool.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately: Driving with a failing turbocharger or a significant boost leak can cause further damage to the engine or catalytic converter. If the whistling is loud or power loss is severe, avoid driving the vehicle.
  • Soon: A professional mechanic can perform a smoke test on the intake system to pinpoint boost leaks, inspect the turbocharger for play in the shaft, and check the PCV system components. They can also scan for pending codes that might not have illuminated the CEL yet.
