Vehicle: 2020 Buick Encore Preferred

Hi all,

My 2020 Buick Encore Preferred with the 1.4L turbo engine has been acting up. Yesterday, I noticed the temperature gauge creeping higher than usual, and then the 'Engine Hot' warning light came on. I pulled over, and after letting it cool, I saw a small puddle of green liquid under the front of the car.

I checked the coolant reservoir, and it's almost empty. I refilled it with the correct Dex-Cool, but I'm worried about driving it if there's a leak.

Has anyone experienced a coolant leak or overheating issues with their 2020 Encore? What are the common culprits for leaks on these cars? Could it be something simple like a hose, or something more serious?

Thanks for any help!

It sounds like you're dealing with a definite coolant leak on your 2020 Buick Encore Preferred, which is causing the overheating. A puddle of green liquid is a clear sign, and an empty reservoir confirms it. Overheating can lead to severe engine damage, so addressing this promptly is crucial.

Here are the common causes and steps to take:

  1. Locate the Leak:
    • Visually inspect all hoses (radiator hoses, heater hoses) for cracks, bulges, or wet spots.
    • Check the radiator itself for any signs of damage or corrosion, especially around the end tanks.
    • Examine the water pump for leaks from its shaft or housing.
    • Look around the thermostat housing, which can sometimes crack or have a failing gasket.
    • Don't forget the coolant reservoir itself or its cap, which can sometimes fail.
    • For the 1.4L turbo engine, the coolant outlet housing (often plastic) is a known failure point.
  2. Pressure Test: A cooling system pressure test is the most effective way to pinpoint elusive leaks. A shop can do this, or you can rent a tool from an auto parts store.

Common Causes for Buick Encore (1.4L Turbo) Coolant Leaks:

  • Coolant Outlet Housing: This plastic component on top of the engine is very prone to cracking and leaking over time.
  • Water Pump: Leaks from the water pump's weep hole indicate a failing bearing or seal.
  • Hoses and Clamps: Deteriorated rubber hoses or loose/corroded clamps are frequent culprits.
  • Radiator: Damage from road debris or age can cause leaks.

When to See a Shop:

  • If you cannot locate the leak: A professional can use specialized tools like a pressure tester or UV dye to find it.
  • If the leak is from a difficult-to-reach component: Components like the water pump or the coolant outlet housing can be challenging for a DIY repair.
  • If the engine has severely overheated: Prolonged or severe overheating can warp cylinder heads or damage head gaskets, requiring a more extensive and costly repair. A shop can perform diagnostics like a compression test or block test to check for head gasket issues.

Do not drive the car if it's actively overheating or if the coolant level drops rapidly after refilling, as this risks serious engine damage.
