Vehicle: 2016 Buick Encore FWD

Hi folks,

I've got a 2016 Buick Encore FWD (base model) with about 80,000 miles on it. For the last few weeks, I've been hearing a noticeable clunking or knocking sound from the front end, especially when I go over speed bumps or uneven pavement. It seems to be coming from both sides, but maybe a bit louder on the passenger side.

It's not constant, only when the suspension is really working. I'm worried it might be something serious. Has anyone else experienced this with their Encore? What should I be looking for?

A clunking noise from the front suspension over bumps is a very common complaint for vehicles as they age, and your 2016 Buick Encore with 80,000 miles is certainly at an age where suspension components can start to wear out. Here are the most likely culprits:

  1. Worn Sway Bar Links: These are a very common source of clunking noises. The bushings or ball joints in the sway bar links wear out, creating play that manifests as a clunk when the suspension articulates.
  2. Worn Strut Mounts/Bearings: The top mount of the strut assembly can wear out, leading to play and noise. The strut bearing, which allows the strut to rotate with steering, can also fail.
  3. Worn Control Arm Bushings: The rubber bushings that connect the control arms to the vehicle's frame can degrade over time, allowing excessive movement and causing clunking sounds.
  4. Loose or Worn Ball Joints: While less common than sway bar links, worn lower ball joints can also produce clunking noises, especially when turning or going over bumps.

When to see a shop:

  • Safety First: Any persistent suspension noise should be inspected. While often not immediately catastrophic, worn components can affect handling, tire wear, and eventually lead to more significant failures.
  • Professional Inspection: A mechanic can put your Encore on a lift and perform a 'shake test' to identify play in various suspension components. They will check:
    • Sway bar links and bushings.
    • Strut mounts and bearings.
    • Control arm bushings.
    • Ball joints.
    • Tie rod ends.

Replacing worn components will restore ride quality and safety. It's often recommended to replace components like sway bar links or struts in pairs (left and right) to maintain balanced handling.
