Vehicle: 2018 Buick Envision Premium

Hey everyone,

I'm having an issue with my 2018 Buick Envision Premium. Recently, the Check Engine Light came on, and I've noticed a pretty consistent rough idle, especially when I'm stopped at a light. It feels like the engine is shaking more than usual.

I managed to get it scanned at an auto parts store, and they said it pulled a P0301 code, indicating a misfire on cylinder 1. Has anyone else experienced this with their Envision? What were the common culprits you found?

I'm hoping it's something relatively simple I can look into myself before taking it to a mechanic. Any advice on where to start troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

ClearTheCode admin answer:

A P0301 code on your 2018 Buick Envision Premium indicates a misfire detected in cylinder 1. This is a common diagnostic trouble code, and while it points to a specific cylinder, the underlying cause can vary. Addressing it promptly is important to prevent potential damage to the catalytic converter.

Here are the common causes and troubleshooting steps:

  1. Ignition System Issues:

    • Spark Plug: A worn, fouled, or damaged spark plug in cylinder 1 is a very common cause of misfires. Over time, spark plugs degrade and can fail to ignite the air/fuel mixture effectively.
    • Ignition Coil: The ignition coil for cylinder 1 might be failing. Each cylinder typically has its own coil pack in modern engines. A failing coil won't deliver enough voltage to the spark plug.
  2. Fuel System Problems:

    • Fuel Injector: A clogged, dirty, or faulty fuel injector for cylinder 1 could be preventing the correct amount of fuel from reaching the cylinder, leading to a lean misfire.
    • Fuel Pressure: Less common for a single-cylinder misfire, but overall low fuel pressure can sometimes manifest as misfires.
  3. Engine Mechanical Issues:

    • Compression Loss: This is a more serious issue, indicating a problem with the cylinder's ability to hold compression, possibly due to worn piston rings, a faulty valve, or a head gasket leak. This would result in a consistent misfire.
    • Vacuum Leaks: While less likely to cause a single-cylinder misfire, a significant vacuum leak near cylinder 1 could lean out its air/fuel mixture.

Troubleshooting Steps You Can Take:

  1. Check Spark Plug & Coil: If you're comfortable, you can inspect the spark plug in cylinder 1. You could also try swapping the ignition coil from cylinder 1 with a coil from another cylinder (e.g., cylinder 2). If the misfire code then moves to cylinder 2 (P0302), you've identified a bad coil.
  2. Fuel Injector Test: This is harder to do without specialized tools, but a mechanic can test the fuel injector's operation.
  3. Visual Inspection: Look for any obvious signs of damage to wires, vacuum hoses, or connectors around cylinder 1.

When to See a Shop:

If swapping the coil doesn't resolve the issue, or if you're not comfortable performing these checks, it's best to take your Envision to a qualified mechanic. They have diagnostic tools that can perform more in-depth tests, such as:

  • Compression Test: To check the internal health of the cylinder.
  • Fuel Pressure Test: To ensure adequate fuel delivery.
  • Scope Testing: To analyze ignition patterns and injector pulses.

Driving with a persistent misfire can lead to unburnt fuel entering and damaging your catalytic converter, which is a very expensive repair. Address this issue as soon as possible.
