2018 Envision Transmission Fluid Change Interval - Is it Lifetime Fluid?

Vehicle: 2018 Buick Envision Premium

Hey everyone,

I've got a 2018 Buick Envision Premium with about 75,000 miles on it now. I'm trying to be proactive with maintenance, and I'm wondering about the transmission fluid. Some people say it's a 'lifetime' fluid, but that just doesn't sit right with me. I've heard different things about GM's recommendations for their 6-speed automatic transmissions.

Is there a specific mileage or time interval that Buick recommends for changing the transmission fluid on these Envisions? I don't tow anything heavy, but I do a lot of city driving with stop-and-go traffic, which I know can be tough on fluids.

Also, is this something a reasonably competent DIYer can tackle, or is it best left to the dealership or an independent shop? I've done oil changes and brake jobs before, but transmission work sounds a bit more complex. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

It's a common misconception that modern transmission fluids are 'lifetime' fluids. While they are designed for extended service, no fluid truly lasts forever, especially under real-world driving conditions. For your 2018 Buick Envision Premium with the 6-speed automatic transmission, Buick's official maintenance schedule typically recommends inspecting the transmission fluid at regular intervals, often around 45,000 to 50,000 miles, and then every 15,000 miles thereafter. A fluid change is usually recommended for vehicles operating under 'severe' service conditions.

  1. Understand Buick's Recommendation: For most normal driving, Buick specifies to 'inspect' the fluid. However, your description of 'a lot of city driving with stop-and-go traffic' often qualifies as a severe service condition. This includes frequent short trips, driving in mountainous areas, or heavy urban traffic where the transmission operates at higher temperatures more frequently. In such cases, a transmission fluid change is generally recommended every 45,000 to 50,000 miles.

  2. Why it's Important: Transmission fluid lubricates moving parts, cools the transmission, and transmits power. Over time, heat and stress break down the fluid's additives, reducing its ability to perform these functions. This can lead to increased wear, harsh shifts, and eventually, costly transmission failure.

  3. DIY vs. Professional: While a simple drain and fill can sometimes be done by an experienced DIYer, modern transmissions, including the one in your Envision, often require specific procedures and tools. The Envision's transmission may not have a traditional dipstick, requiring specific fill procedures and temperature checks to ensure correct fluid level. Furthermore, only a portion of the fluid is removed during a drain and fill, leaving old fluid in the torque converter and cooler lines.

  4. When to See a Shop:

    • For a Full Flush/Exchange: A professional shop can perform a fluid exchange that replaces nearly all the old fluid, which is more effective than a simple drain and fill. They also have the diagnostic tools to check fluid temperature accurately for proper leveling.
    • If you notice issues: If you're experiencing any rough shifting, delayed engagement, or unusual noises, it's best to have a qualified technician diagnose the problem before attempting a fluid change, as it could indicate a deeper issue.
    • Correct Fluid Type: Ensure the correct DEXRON-VI fluid is used. Using the wrong fluid can cause significant damage.

Given your mileage and driving conditions, considering a transmission fluid change is a wise preventative measure. It's often a small investment that can significantly extend the life of your transmission.
