Vehicle: 2021 Buick Envision Avenir

I'm having a frustrating issue with my 2021 Buick Envision Avenir. Lately, I've been getting intermittent "Key Fob Not Detected" messages, especially when trying to start the car. Also, the passive entry system (where you just touch the door handle to unlock) is working only about half the time.

I've already replaced the battery in the key fob with a brand new one, thinking that would solve it, but the problem persists. It's really inconvenient. Is this a known issue with the newer Envisions? What else could be causing this electronic hiccup?

Intermittent "Key Fob Not Detected" messages and passive entry issues on your 2021 Buick Envision Avenir can be quite frustrating, especially after replacing the key fob battery. This typically points to a communication problem between the key fob and the vehicle's RCDLR (Remote Control Door Lock Receiver) module.

Here's a troubleshooting guide and potential causes:

  1. Re-check Key Fob Battery:

    • Even if new, ensure it's the correct type (CR2032 is common) and inserted with the correct polarity. Sometimes a new battery can be faulty, or installed incorrectly.
    • Try your spare key fob if you have one. If the spare works perfectly, it points to an issue with the primary fob itself.
  2. Check for Signal Interference:

    • Are you in an area with high electromagnetic interference (e.g., near radio towers, power lines, or even strong Wi-Fi signals)? This can sometimes temporarily block the fob's signal.
    • Ensure there aren't other electronic devices in your pocket or purse that could be interfering with the fob's signal.
  3. Vehicle's RCDLR Module:

    • The RCDLR module is responsible for receiving signals from the key fob. If this module is faulty or has a loose connection, it can cause intermittent detection issues.
    • The antennas that pick up the fob's signal (located in various parts of the car) could also be at fault.
  4. Reprogramming the Key Fob:

    • Sometimes, the key fob might lose its programming. While some vehicles allow DIY programming, newer Buicks often require dealership tools.
  5. Wiring Inspection:

    • Less common, but damaged or corroded wiring to the RCDLR module or its antennas could disrupt communication.
  6. When to See a Shop:

    • If trying a different fob or ruling out interference doesn't solve the problem.
    • If the issue is persistent and affects both key fobs.
    • A Buick dealership or a qualified automotive locksmith can diagnose RCDLR module issues, check antenna functionality, and reprogram key fobs using specialized diagnostic equipment. They can also check for any relevant diagnostic trouble codes related to the passive entry system.
