2021 Envision Stalling While Driving - Multiple Warning Lights

Vehicle: 2021 Buick Envision Avenir

I'm having a very serious and scary issue with my 2021 Buick Envision Avenir. While driving, usually at lower speeds or when coming to a stop, the engine will suddenly stall. When it stalls, multiple warning lights flash on the dash – Check Engine, Battery, Oil Pressure, and sometimes the ABS light.

It usually restarts after a few tries, but it's completely unpredictable and has happened several times now. There's no specific OBD-II code that stays active after it restarts, which makes it hard to diagnose. The car has about 25,000 miles on it.

Has anyone experienced this kind of intermittent stalling with their Envision? What could cause such a sudden shutdown and multiple warning lights without a persistent code? I'm worried about safety.

ClearTheCode admin answer:

Intermittent stalling, especially when accompanied by multiple warning lights, indicates a critical system failure that causes the engine to lose power. The lack of a persistent OBD-II code makes diagnosis challenging, but the symptoms point to a few key areas for your 2021 Buick Envision.

Here are the most likely causes and diagnostic considerations:

  1. Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP Sensor): This sensor tells the engine control module (ECM) the position and speed of the crankshaft. If it fails intermittently, the ECM loses crucial timing information, causing the engine to stall. When the engine stalls, all warning lights (Check Engine, Battery, Oil Pressure) will illuminate because the engine is no longer running.
  2. Fuel Delivery System:
    • Fuel Pump: An intermittently failing fuel pump or a clogged fuel filter could cause a sudden loss of fuel pressure, leading to stalling. The pump might work again after a brief cool-down.
    • Fuel Pressure Sensor: A faulty sensor could send incorrect readings, causing the ECM to cut fuel.
  3. Ignition System: While less common for intermittent stalling without a misfire code, a failing ignition module or main relay could cause a complete loss of spark.
  4. ECM (Engine Control Module) Issues: In rare cases, the ECM itself can have an intermittent internal fault, leading to sudden shutdowns. This is usually a last resort diagnosis.
  5. Main Power/Ground Connections: Loose or corroded battery terminals, main ground straps, or power connections to the ECM or fuel pump can cause intermittent power loss to critical components, leading to stalling.

When to See a Shop:

  • Immediately. Intermittent stalling while driving is a significant safety hazard. Do not delay in getting this diagnosed.
  • A professional shop can perform a comprehensive diagnostic scan, including checking for pending or historical codes that didn't illuminate the CEL permanently. They can also monitor live data from sensors like the CKP sensor, fuel pressure sensor, and others during a test drive to catch the fault as it occurs.
  • Diagnosing intermittent electrical or sensor failures requires specialized tools and expertise to ensure your safety and the proper functioning of your vehicle.
